Cork board for bases

Recommended Posts

Cool think I'll hit up the hardware store and check for some cool things for bases. First time actually making a good effort for bases with my old army back in the early 2000s all I did was paint the base green with some green sand.

5mm Cork Sheets are a pretty versatile material for basing and you can probably find them at a local arts and craft store. GreenStuffWorld also carries them: Cork Sheet 5mm

These are some WIP Cyberwolves I based with 5mm sheet:

Sounds good, that Green Stuff place has alot of cool stuff. I live in the states though so it might be better for me to just look elsewhere for now.

Edit: But it does have alot of the things I want so if I can't find the stuff at any of the local shops I'll just order from there.

Go to Walmart in the office supply aisle where they have the dry erase boards, you can usually find 12"x12" packs.  I just bought some the other day.

You asked for tips so here ya go:

Use superglue to apply a broken off piece to your base then break off the edges to fit your base.  This will let you decide your edges as you go.

Use a pin vice to drill one or two holes into a model (maybe one per foot) and push a paperclip segment into there.  Protip: do NOT use your good clippers to cut paperclips, they're far harder than you think and they ding up those nice clippers.

Jam your pinned model into the base to decide positioning.  Turn it till you get the look and forward edge you want.

Get a big glop of superglue on the feet and pins of your model, push them in, then apply push your model into the cork.  The superglue will help seal up the cork around the feet so it doesn't break apart on you and will run into the cracks.

If you have sharper corners of cork sticking out then superglue those too, it will help keep them from breaking up as you handle the model.

When you start spraying the model you'll probably notice the primer covers the model much quicker than the base.  Do NOT keep spraying, just use more paint on the cork.  If you keep spraying till you get perfect coverage on the cork you're going to get way too much primer on the model.  <-- personal experience
