INKS
I know nothing about Kill Team but apparently this is all my local game store plays. Where should I start? I guess I can just google it but I thought that people here would have a better understanding of what to look for Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359229-local-only-plays-kill-team/ Share on other sites
Panzer
Get the core rules. It includes the rules for most of the factions too. Additionally I'd recommend getting the Elites supplement as it greatly expands the available units with things that imo should've been part of the core in the first place. INKS
Ok, so just buy the rules? I don't really need the models personally. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359229-local-only-plays-kill-team/#findComment-5408382 Share on other sites
Imren
If you already have a 40k army then you can start off by playing with those models (40k troops choices for the standard kill team game type) you have in your army. If you get to know any fellow gamers that play kill team ask them to just have a look through their core rule book (or perhaps ask to borrow it for a couple of days if you got to know them a bit) before you buy it. If you feel happy with what you see and still feel like getting into kill team then buy the core rule book, you won't need all the krimskrams that comes with the starter box. WarriorFish
It's very easy to get started on KT, as the game is built around the bread and butter of an army so you can all but guarantee you have the models for a decent team if you have an army :) The rulebook is good, full of lots of bits and gives you everything you need. Battlescribe also has KT entries so you can build your lists easily with it :tu: Commanders is an optional supplement whereas Elites is more of an expansion, but this is just as well as many share my opinion that including commanders kind of defeats the point of KT. Being about the grunts where the hero is the squad sergeant or equivalent is part of what makes KT special. The KT team boxes are decent value and give you cards and tokens for the army/team as well as some special abilities but are not necessary :) It plays a bit differently to normal 40k (whatever edition you may be used to :P ), but it works well for the game and keeps things pacey as every dice roll is important. One of the main things is who gets first go each turn is down to a dice roll so you have to plan carefully, and it can be advantageous to go second too. Not to mention some decent inbuilt drawbacks to horde armies (break tests can get brutal) so it's a pretty well rounded game. What army are you thinking of starting with? Imren
regarding break tests: I won a game because I passed my break tests with only one deathwatch dude (zealot blackshield with storm shield and power maul = brutal in kill team) left on the table and the opposing GSC team broke with almost half the team still on the table. Panzer
Commanders is okay if you want some kind of team vs boss scenario but I really wouldn't recommend using it in regular games either. INKS
Thanks for all the info. I only have a ravenwing force, so I am guessing I'll need a few normal marines to get started. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359229-local-only-plays-kill-team/#findComment-5408646 Share on other sites
Brother Tyler
Yes, you'll need something other than the Ravenwing (you won't find any bikers in the game, and there are very few jump/jet pack models). To expand on the good advice that others have given, you can probably skip the Rogue Trader and Arena expansions unless you really want the minis and terrain (in the Rogue Trader expansion). The Kill Team boxed army sets are good starters, but there are plenty of mainstream WH40K boxes that also work as starters (if you go into a GW store, these will have a Kill Team sticker on them). One of the very interesting things about Kill Team is that you have a full command roster of all of the models available to you (generally up to 20), and you build a kill team from that up to a set points value (this value may be higher under certain conditions). Most of the factions are represented in the books, though a couple (Kroot mercenaries and Chaos Daemons) have rules in White Dwarf magazine. There are even rules for using the models from the Blackstone Fortress game in Kill Team. The Adepta Sororitas aren't represented yet, but I'm confident that we'll see rules for them concurrent with or shortly after their upcoming WH40K release. The Inquisition isn't represented, nor are the Imperial Knights/Chaos Knights (and the Knights are inappropriate in this game anyway, so their absence isn't an issue). Overall, as can be expected from a squad-level/warband skirmish game, there is a much lower entry cost than mainstream WH40K, yet Kill Team is every bit as fun.
