Centurions

I have a box of centurions and was thinking of running them with lascannons for some much needed anti-tank/knight to my list. With 4 wounds a pop, 2+ save, the ability to put transhuman physiology on them (and potentially a new rumoured WL trait which gives a 4+ invuln bubble) sounds like it could be a difficult to remove shooting platform.

 

Does anyone run these in their lists? Should I be looking at different loadouts or even the assault variants?? 

 

Any advice much appreciated!

Why do you think Centurions aren't BT-like? Guys in heaviest armour possible striding along the battlefield to take down buildings with their hand - seems ok in my book. Like terminators on steroids.

The problem with them is delivery though - shooty centurions want to be stationary, assault centurions have to get close and personal, which raises the issue of transoprt. If we do get the rumored stratagem for LRC, they will be golden (well, not golden, black rather, but golden centurions are ven scarier with IF rules)

My problems with the centurions are basically entirely aesthetical. I just don't like how they look. Like at all. They're too short and stout, and feel like a squat unit more than space marines. Their arms could be scraping the ground if they hung straight down. The thick legs look like they'll get in the way of each other when walking, but then the shoulders are so extremely far apart that the centurion is almost as wide as it is tall. It just feel like the designer didn't know if they wanted an 'inhumanly' proportioned brutal walker that's got utility, or a heroic champion walker, with the highly decorated panels, so its stuck in the middle.

Removing the, in my opinion absolutely awfull drills, and instead giving them melee weapons, does help a lot. As does the tabards, custom shoulder pads and other conversions, but still I think they're too short and squat, for my taste. My point is, they can absolutely be made to 'feel like Templar' and the concept itself, like you point out, is not in conflict with the Templar concept. I just don't like the base model.

I run them in my army with Las/Hurricane Bolters. They do well, but I don’t play tournament games.

They trail up the board behind my captain/ancient/lieutenant bubble. Good unit to buff.

The only time I field my apothecary is to follow these guys around.

I suspect it's the Lascannon variant specifically; standing at the back and shooting stuff isn't very Templary.

 

Punching things to death with Siege Drills is a different matter!

I use grav cannons and hurricane bolters, they can easily deal with both chaff screens and heavy infantry. With proper character support and a stratagem they deal significant amount of damage to any target, including heavy tanks. Obviously, they're not going to kill a knight in a single volley, but you can expect to inflict around 7-10 wounds to it with grav cannons.

My issue with lascannons is their cost, IIRC it's 300 points with hurricane bolters, which is almost as much as two devastator squads, and I really don't like having weapons with 24" range difference as well as completely different role on a single unit.

 

Aestetically wise... well, at least they're still better than primaris :biggrin.:

There was a thread on here somewhere a year or so back where someone made the legs longer, it really helped their look.
