Kill Team Starter Box worth it?

Hey Team,

I am debating with myself if I should get the Kill Team Starter Box and I'm looking for input.

So... I would really like to get into the game, and I have zero terrain at home. I have use for the reivers, but the T'au aren't really my thing. Do you think it would be worth it or should I just get the book and some cheap terrain instead

Get the book and if you already don't have enough models for a kill team, then read the book and then choose what kill team faction to play afterwards.

For the price difference between the starter box and the book you can buy droves of brass wire, flock, and plaster and build your own trees and bushes, get some water effects and build a water filled grenade crater, a creek or a fish pond. You could also buy MDF terrain that looks quite good for their price. Perhaps you could also squeeze in a gaming mat (made out of mouse pad material) in your budget. All of it for almost  the same total price as the starter set. If you haven't decided yet what to play then that is even more reason to skip the box and just get the book. All that terrain building will also improve your hobby skills.

So the new Kill Team Starter Set includes:

(all values in USD)

Core Manual ($40)

Reivers ($30)

Fire Warriors Breacher Team ($50)

Tactics Cards ($?)

Sector Mechanicus Alchomite Stack ($50)

Sector Mechanicus Ferratonic Incinerator ($75)

Tokens ($?)

Dice ($?)

So we're looking at a value of over $245. And I'm not even sure if I got all of the terrain - if I missed anything, the value increases. And then you have to factor in the value of the dice ($10?), cards ($10?), and tokens ($?). So a low-ball estimate is that the value of the components is at least $260. All of this for $160.

Sure, there might be a wee bit less than there was in the first boxed set, but it's still a great value.

Valid discussion is that the new starter set isn't as packed as the first starter set, nor does it compare favorably with other boxed kits. From an absolute standpoint (i.e., the value of the components separately versus the value of the whole box), it is inarguably a decent value.

If you don't need/want any components, you can always recoup some portion of their cost/value by selling them or trading for stuff you want.

My personal view is that the box is subjectively good if you want/need the rulebook, terrain, and at least one of the factions (selling/trading anything else you don't want/need).

I purchased the release starter, and didn't regret, I was and am not into GSC or Adeptus Mechanicus, but I got some bits for conversions and traded some of the others. The dice, terrain and Rulebook made it a smoking deal IMO, and I do not regret it. The starters GW has released since the launch of 8th and their new business model, have been fantastic. I don't currently play Necromunda, but I am eyeballing that new starter to potentially get into the game. And I'll have more terrain to add to my collection which makes it a huge bonus.

Personally I say go for it, you can always trade or sell off the models you don't need. Another thing I would recommend is seeing if someone in your local group or game store would split it with you for the Tau.

That's kind of what I wanted to do. I actually don't really have a gaming group yet, but I wanted to talk my brother into splitting the thing so we could play at home. So far he seems to be a bit reluctant ...
