That old guardsman looks a bit comical (with his big head and feet) but already promising!

His big head with the 80s shades is my favourite bit  :biggrin.:  The feet look even bigger in person and the sole of the boot sticks out half a mile exacerbating the whole thing, I could model some handles on the back and have them wearing snow shoes! I'd also forgotten how many creases they used to sculpt on Rogue Trader minis, creases in the crease of the creases!

@Umbre Lynx -

Cheers! This one has been less a labour of love, just a labour, but almost there. Yeah of course, the recipe is: Base coat with Vallejo Turquoise, then wash liberally with a thinned down mixture of Vallejo Black and Imperial Blue. Then highlight it back up with the turquoise. Lighten the turquoise by adding some Vallejo Bone White for the edge highlights. Then work back into some of the recesses with the wash again wherever you think necessary!

Thanks a bunch, good sir! Looking forward to try it! Cheers!

What ho!

It's over! A few lessons learned with this one but I got her base sorted last night and now she's ready to stand at the front of an army posing awkwardly for Imperial propaganda data slates.

And here she is on the thing. I noticed during a dry run that I'd completely forgotten to remove the bit of ground around her foot on the floor, so had some fun carving that off without destroying the paint on her power heel, good times. But some creative leaf coverage and job's a good'un!

Really great painting so far, looking forward to seeing it completed!!

Cheers!

No worries, hope it works out for you!

What ho!

Happy New Year, all! Finally made a start on the box set! I wanted to add a little detail to them so they weren't all the same thanks to the monoposeness, and because they're the 'Order of the Forgotten Vow' I'm adding books to all of them so they can at least remember some of them. So I made a little book, made a mold from bluestuff and that'll do nicely.

I've also tried some two brush blending on the armour, at least a sort of two brush blending combined with wet blending thing that it ended up being but it's all about learning. Anyhoo, I started on her right leg and by the left I was loving how smoothly the transitions come out so I think this is the way to go from here on.

gallery_15988_15917_69189.jpg gallery_15988_15917_84642.jpg

At this rate I should have them done by 2030!

The leafs look stellar! Such a nice little touch, yet it manages to provide a melancholic mood to the whole piece (imho, at least). This is proof that, sometimes, mistakes can lead to good things. Awaiting your next work.

Cheers! This is the first time I've used leaves on bases, I always used to go for a snow effect so I'm glad they're working out well!

Love both models! :happy.:

I wish I could get a good non caucasian skin tone like that of Sister Mary. Any tips you could share?

I used Vallejo Dark Fleshtone for the base then highlighted it with... let me have a look.. I think it was Vallejo Elf Skintone. Then I used a heavily diluted mix of red and blue inks to work into the recesses getting darker into her eyes as I don't black line them first, I just use a dark shade as base for the iris. Hope that helps a bit!

@Bjorn Firewalker - Cheers, Bjorn!

What ho!

Progress trudges ever slowly onwards like the Monolith Monsters! The first sister is done and I've started work on the superior, I'm going to be using the helmet with the open visor instead of the one in the box as that is one beefy visage. Anyhoo, on to some pictures.

I also got the old OG IG medic done, his arms are a rubbish fit but the nostalgia makes up for it. I took a risk and carved up his left arm and moved it to a slightly different position, I also added a little communication thing to his glove so he wasn't just fist pumping the air like a lot of the old Rogue Trader guard ended up doing. I'll save that pose for the captain.

And then because why not have a million things on the go at once? I've started on an Inquisitor and her retinue. I found a nice head on shapeways but the clear plastic makes it a bit hard to see. Held together with blu tac and a prayer at the moment but it's a start!

That'll do for now, time to vanish back into the mists!

What ho B&C, been a while since an update in this crazy world we find ourselves in. I hope you've all been keeping safe and well!

Painting of the sisters was continuing at a slow old pace, I'd finished a few and was feeling generally ok with how they were going but something started to feel off with them and I realised I was getting bored of doing nice clean schemes on miniatures. So I bought myself some Winsor & Newton oils and had a crack with them instead. What a revelation! They've really brought back the joy in painting again and it's nice to be learning and figuring out a load of new techniques. So here's the first sister done with an acrylic base and oils shading and highlighting for a goosey.

gallery_15988_15917_130014.jpg gallery_15988_15917_47588.jpg

I tried some salt weathering on the base but without an airbrush, it went ok but it wasn't quite right. Not bad for a first crack though.

Then I suddenly got an urge to paint a marine, I haven't painted one in almost 16 years so of course went for the most masochistic chapter badge of them all.

gallery_15988_15917_188932.jpg gallery_15988_15917_50963.jpg gallery_15988_15917_195640.jpg gallery_15988_15917_87631.jpg

I really enjoyed painting this chap so I'm thinking of getting some kit bashing on the go and building a beaten up kill team of unlucky sods.

I had another go at the salt weathering, this time with an airbrush and with a different palette. I'm much happier with this one so I'll be using the scheme on the sisters too. All in all a productive few months, if only because it's a nice new direction to move in so I'm looking forward to getting a load more things painted up!

Cheers guys!

Intermittent updates continue, so I'm doing slightly better with posting than my previous track record. I've got two jobs on at the moment with matching deadlines which doesn't leave much time for hobbying but I'm fitting it in where I can, though I stayed up until 2 in the morning painting checks onto a pauldron, my mind, what have I done?!

I got a Sister superior finished, I'm putting together the next member of the squad now I've finally settled on how I'm painting them up. Painting a whole batch of ten one after other never seems to work for me so I'm trying to dodge that by doing something different after each one, it'll take longer but I've always been more of a painter than a player so it keeps things interesting, hopefully.

gallery_15988_15917_122742.jpg

I've also gotten started on a Lamenters kill team, so I cobbled this chap together. A bit of a weak sauce true scaling but I like the look of MK3 on Primaris legs, I think he looks like a bit of a bruiser. I'm going to be naming them all after characters in Greek tragedies, seems fitting!

I couldn't find a pistol anywhere so he's been trusted with an old Rogue Trader bolt pistol, he'd better look after it!

And this is where he's at, at the moment

Now back to work!

What ho!

The answer to the reference is.... The Perils of Penelope Pitstop. Though now I'm wishing I'd gone for the cooler Thunderbirds reference, ah well.

@Mazer Rackham - Too kind, and thank you!

@Ketzer - Cheers! I was tempted to go for red purity seals but I spotted a pot of purple out of the corner of my eye so I thought I'd try something a bit different, though I might use red in the future. It depends on which coloured wax has been supplied by the Departmento Munitorum that year!

@Bjorn Firewalker - Thanks! I'm going to go with an urban base them, a bit like on the cultists except more in depth, hopefully.

@Kolgrim DeathHowl - Cheers!

@Dwango - Thanks! I'm quite happy with her face, it's always the most nerve wracking bit to paint so I'm just glad she doesn't look cross eyed :biggrin.:

@Jaxom - Haha! I modelled the leader with one first then thought sod it, why not give them all scarves. I like to imagine the Patriarch happily sitting on his chair knitting with all 4 of his arms! I've two more on the go, though one looks like more of a cravat so at least he's dressed for an Edwardian picnic.

Onwards to things!

I got some work done on her base the other day. After a bit of trial and error I made a street corner and cut out some thin card to give it a vaguely gothic feel. Pin heads for rivets and a skull from a clearly heretical soul who's received the Emperor's justice.

gallery_15988_15917_98363.jpg gallery_15988_15917_82383.jpg

I've always liked this season so I'm going to try and go for an Autumnal feel, I bought a hole punch thing that punches out tiny leaves from actual leaves, so I've been out scouring the local park for nice colours. It might look rubbish but we'll hope for the best and see how it goes!

Can I ask if there's a tutorial/specific approach to designing the ruined base (especially thickness of plasticard?)? Your bases are perfect and just what I've always wanted to make but never found for sale.

This is great work. I really love the way you paint armour plates. The marines and sisters look excellent. The inquisitor is a fun conversion too.

I've had a go at making MKIII/Primaris marines myself. I got one built to a level I'm pretty happy with, including a bunch of work on the backpack and some GS piping round the leg armour. I looks ok but I'm not sure I can be bothered to make a whole squad of them. I could give them hammers and shields to be my "counts as" terminators, I suppose.
