Can the Custodes be used as a separate army?

Recommended Posts

Kind of confused and probably a noob question: Are the custodes they're own army or do you run them along side a separate army like you run Inquisitors and Deathwatch? I've been intrigued by them and I like they're models. It wouldn't be something I could start getting into right away but eventually down the road I would like to dabble with them at some point. Just trying to get some clarification, so I know before I make the leap into buying some models.

They have their own codex (a bit more limited than most). And a number of forgeworld units.

They can be run mono, but due to their low model count, allies such as a battalion of astra militarum can be useful for cp and objective camping.

I'm not sure I can follow. They got their own codex, so sure, they're their own army. I don't get the example of Deathwatch - they, too, are an army of their own.

BUT: Both armies tend to be allied in in the fluff. It's rare that an all-out Custodes army hits the battlefield, same as with Deathwatch. Although the Custodes are seen more often since the Indomitus Crusade, in Torchbearer Fleets and the like.

You can ally their units in as with every other faction in 40k. Not really sure though, if this info is of help to you.

No that does answer my question I had the Index Imperum 2 and was reading the custodes part and they sounded pretty cool. But if they have their own codex then maybe eventually I'll add that to the many lists of armies I'd like to try out, I just didn't know they had their own codex so that answered my question.

My advice - Don't buy any new armies until 2020.  There is a release coming soon.

Also, Custodes are incredibly 1-trick-pony right now, and unless you are paying out the butt for FW, you aren't having a lot of fun.

Ya I'm working on this DW army for right now and when I go down to my aunts house in FL after Thanksgiving I'm going to pick up all my old SW army think it was like a 2k point army, half the army was painted and the other half was just built and primed. So I was thinking with detachments doing DW and SW, I'm still a far off way from playing but I love the hobby. I have really bad stress and anxiety. I moved up to GA to take care of my grandparents and my granny died from cancer and my grandfather has bad Alzheimer which gets worse day by day so dealing with his illness is super depressing so doing this modeling and painting is like my way of coping with everything going on. But once I get a full army which will probably be the DW since the SW are all from the early 2000's and probably aren't up to current standards of playing. But the guys at the local game shops were super cool they said they would help teach me how to play once I got my army painted and just came up to the shops. It's just all the shops are more than an hour away and it's hard to go up there frequently since he pretty much needs a baby sitter at the house 24/7. I got my aunt and sister here helping but they both work so I'm usually the one stuck at the house when they'e gone most of the time. But once I do get the army painted I'll head up there more frequently.

They have their own codex but they are probably one of the most fluffiest armies that has allies, the others being Inquisition and Grey Knights.  No one will think you are 'that guy' taking allies.  Unless you take 80% guard and just use Vertus Praetors, because then we all know what that person is doing lol.

That is no reason not to collect an army.

What’s your local games store? If you are near Atlanta then Giga Bites is very good. ( Marietta - just north of the ATL)

i live in blairsville which is a good couple  hours from there so I can't get out there too often, I'll do some more research on local game shops closer to me.

Good luck - gotta be some mountain men playing 40k!

If you play Kill Team, it's worth noting that Custodes are playable there too. I say this because it would give you a way to play test with as little as a single 5 man box. Since you imply that there are many other armies you want to try on for size, KT is great for that.

For example, I want to get into Eldar. I would normally need 2 squads and an HQ to get game. On top of that, along the DE side of Aeldari, I'd have to pick Kabals, Cults or Coven for my first 3 purchases.

But with Kill Team, I can buy a box of Kabalites and play. Then a box of Wyches and play. I'd still have to get two boxes to play a coven, because you only get 5 in a box. I can do the same with CWE aspects, though there are only rules for Banshees, Striking Scorpions and Dire Avengers, and none of the Phoenix Lords have KT rules either.

From you collection of Kill Teams, you choose which factions to grow into full armies. Best part? Because of Souping, you can also achieve army status by combining various Kill Teams. It wouldn't work for the Drukari because their sub-factions don't play well together, but CWE Kill Teams definitely combine to form detachments.

Probably my favourite part of the current state of the game.

Yeah, Custodes are a fully-fledged army. They have a named character, three different HQ options for different play styles, a Troops, five Elites options - one veteran version of the Troops, one Terminators and a standard bearer for each, plus they get Contemptors - a Fast Attack in the Vertus Praetors and a Heavy Support thanks to their Land Raider. This means that you can, in fact, field a Brigade from Codex options alone - granted, the minimum points of said Brigade is like 3,500 pts., but still, it can be done.
