Aothaine
Morticon shared a interesting way to paint Blood Angels contrast over yellow paints and one of the examples he had was over retruibutor armour which gave a look like below except red. Anyone know of a good way to get this look but with blue for Ultra marines? Maybe Leadbelcher? Grey Knights Steel maybe? Example of Grey Knights Steel. Anyone have an example of Ultramarines Blue Contrast on top of Grey Knights Steel? If not I might be able to pick up the paints this weekend to test it out. I know of ways to get the style I want with wet blending, and damn it looks good! But it takes a long time to get right and the highlights are going to only be from a set angle. If I can get this metallic blue look just using Grey Knights Steel and Ultramarines Blue Contrast this could be a really easy way to get a army done and looking the way I want it to look. Aothaine
I think any metallic under spray will get the blue to pull away from it, giving you the effect you’re going after. The yellow undercoat gives a yellow highlight on those blood angels as opposed to a white or gray highlight effect. The metallic undercoat will most likely have the same outcome. I think ultramarines look fantastic in a metallic tone. Post up pics when you try it out! I'll be grabbing the paints tomorrow night, maybe Saturday. I'll do something up then and get it posted here asap. Edit: Found this tutorial which uses different paints but looks pretty good. https://redemptionminiatures.com/painting-metallic-blue-with-contrast/ found this from http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357026-painting-metallic-blue-with-contrast/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359737-ultramarines-painting-inquiry/#findComment-5421771 Share on other sites

Yeah, I figure if I can get something close for the non-HQ units then I can spend more time on the HQ units. It might not matter at all if I end up going Iron Hands though lol! Still, I want to look into it. Edit: I'm not going to be able to purchase this until after I move in Feb. I'll get an example up as soon as I can though. OldFlakes
This might help Polyurethane Black gloss Vallejo metal color duraluminium Createx colours Iridescent Electric Blue, two even coats Vallejo Premium Polyurethane Gloss https://www.instagram.com/p/B3R-6qzHcRv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link and this is what it looks like with all the steps above with a Vallejo Premium Polyurethane Satin coat https://www.instagram.com/p/B4o4TFbHEfe/?utm_source=ig_web_options_share_sheet I like this look a lot as the iridescent paint changes Hue depending of the angle and sources of light going into the red spectrum, this gives a dark blue/purpel hue in the unlit areas giving off a cobalt feel to it. I have tried Tallasar blue over bright and dark metals an i was not satisfied with it as the hue of the blue would appear cyan in some lighting giving off that alpha legion look. https://www.instagram.com/p/B4o7QoVnpcU/?utm_source=ig_web_options_share_sheet Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359737-ultramarines-painting-inquiry/#findComment-5422520 Share on other sites

I don't have an air brush just yet. So I was planning on using the contrast paint as a wash, water it down, after layering the grey knight silver over a spray prime undercoat. This are good options for me to consider for sure. Thank you so much for sharing! Edit: So I'm an old guy, my hands shake and my vision is really bad lol! Something I really appreciate is just how visible the light reflects off the grey knights silver on the model in my first post. That is going to help a lot if I end up deciding to just use wet blending to make my own light reflections. The game plan if I do all this by hand is to paint them like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrJ0y5iRiMY But I think maybe I should only do this with the characters. Which is why I was looking for a way to get a similar look but make it way faster for all the non-characters in the army. MegaVolt87
Hm, if you have an airbrush that would help. I have seen good work on the net with straight contrast over metallic base coats. Aothaine
Make sure to use the medium GW sells for Contrast paints. Ohhhh! Maybe that was the issue I was having. :/ I ended up just giving up on the Iyanden Yellow contrast. I applied it 2-3 more times this weekend and still could not get the right yellow. It is fine though. Contrast paints are cool, but I have also realized that I can't see anything when painting so I need to wait until I get a huge magnifying glass before I can start painting again. I'm super picky and having my own models look like a 2 year old with crayons is a no-go for me personally. But I think I have settled on a look. Found a picture in the SM Codex that I really like and plan to use for my DiY chapter. This way I can play with what ever rules I want. I know this is the Silver Templars. But I will be changing a few things. Right now I'm testing Leadbelcher with an Nuln Oil coat. Going to be testing out a few of the other metals to see what other colors I can get. The range is going to be really dark and gritty though so I think I'll end up sticking with Leadbelcher, highlight with with Nuln Oil. Ohhhh just found Iron Warriors base. Might be trying this then. Prime: Chaos Black Base: Iron Warriors Highlights & Melee Weapons: Leadbelcher Weapon Plates: Abaddon Black Shade: Nuln Oil Shoulder pads: Iyanden Yellow Maybe Chaos Black? I could also switch it up and give it a difficult color all together as well though. But I think Iyanden Yellow will look good. Pretty sure that is what they used in the picture above. Highlight Weapon Plates: Eshin Grey Sharp Highlight Armor: Leadbelcher Hm, if you have an airbrush that would help. I have seen good work on the net with straight contrast over metallic base coats. Sadly I don't. I'm hoping to get one in the future though. I think that will help speed up a large amount of my painting time and give me the tools to do the cool glow effects that you can get from air brushes. I still plan on getting the paints and testing this out in the future though. They have a quick mention in the Ultramarines Supplement but most of their current lore comes from the book that is a special extra from the Conquest magazines. They still look awesome. I'm going to really need to think about this. Since with GW's new tournament rules, if I did end up building Silver Templars I would not be allowed to use Ultramarine special characters or RG if I wanted to. Which is kind of pushing me back to just building boys in blue, which is not a bad option.
