painting.for.my.sanity
I like him what you've done with him - I've always thought the Primaris Captain was a very Templar-appropriate model, given the tabard. I'm guessing you're running him as a Marshal not a Primaris-scale EC? I converted my copy of the model into a Chaplain, so they're pretty versatile. Sete
Its currently the best model to run as a primaris Templar HQ. I do dislike the "rope" on the chest, but i have to think its holding the cape. The lantern on the loincloth is fitting, and i just hate left handed power swords, as well as the vannila sword they have. I will be running him as Castellan for now, Relic blade, if our relics do have one and bolt pistol, while the Marshalls are gear locked. Maybe ill get a servitor in the future carrying a bolt rifle. (maybe his brother that failed the Initiation process, just for that spice of grimdark) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359841-abhorrence-crusade/#findComment-5424300 Share on other sites
painting.for.my.sanity
With you on the left-handed power swords (I've given mine a right-handed Crozius). Your setup looks way better than the default. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359841-abhorrence-crusade/#findComment-5424303 Share on other sites
Sete
So im working on Primaris Crusade Organization. Chaplains, Apothecaries and what not are pretty straightforward. Captain is the Marshall, no shenanigans there. Chapter Ancient and Lt should be Sword Brethren. If the Lt is the warlord of the Crusade then he is a Castellan. Reivers will be Veterans. Now despite not being the standard modus operandi of the BT, even the custodes have the Eyes of the Emperor, so I think Templars need a scout and Infiltration unit. Reivers and all elites, the Veterans and Sergeants will have white helmets, denoting Veteran status but not red marking of the Sword Brethren. Intercessors are the run of the mill troops, and the other unit with phobos are neophytes. Neophytes will sport only one cross on the shoulder pads. Fingers crossed for mixed squads later on. Fast and attack and heavy support are initiates aswell. Hopefully for Primaris players sword bros will later be added as an elite unit for the chapter, but for the moment 2 LT serving as bodyguard of the Marshall will have to do. Sete
So yesterday I made a test model for Contrast. How do you actually use the Black Templar paint? I sprayed it with corax white, the first coat of BT was patchy on the flat areas, and the second coat just made it all black. Any tips? Thinking on putting a layer of metallic grey first. JAG Templar
Have a look at this guy. He goes way, way beyond table top standard but his deal at the moment is teaching people how to use contrast paints. https://youtu.be/flqW2F_kSvE Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/359841-abhorrence-crusade/#findComment-5429627 Share on other sites
Hymnblade
How do you actually use the Black Templar paint? I sprayed it with corax white, the first coat of BT was patchy on the flat areas, and the second coat just made it all black. Any tips? I find that it helps if you really try to break up any pooling on the flat areas. Apply the paint, then once your brush doesn't have much paint left on it, spread out anything that resembles pooling until you've only left a thin film on the flat panels. This seems to help a lot with the patchy effect. Eberious's advice here might also help: if too much grey/white shows through, you can do a second coat with 1:1 diluted paint. Sete
Thanks for the suggestions, will have a look before painting. Edit: on the video his BT colour got really smooth. He is also using a thick coat which I did not on my test model. Maybe my issue is using Corax White spray, and then applying BT right after. Could need a grey in between, since his black was applied on grey. Might use a metallic grey and see how it goes. Hymnblade
The recommendation I've seen for BT contrast is to undercoat with Grey Seer, not sure how much that matters vs white. Sete
Well its all sprayed white now :D Ill give another go tonight see how it goes. Hymnblade
There's definitely a learning curve with Contrast. My first contrast model was very patchy, but later ones quickly got better. Sete
Second model already looks a lot better. Now i see why grey is used as base, will provide a darkish Black Templar colour.I just needed to be generous with the amout of paint.Still i like these Greyish Black Templars. JAG Templar
Yeah, I think yours looks good. I’m going to try dawn stone grey zenithal airbrushed over mechanicus grey as my base. As many others have pointed out there is a distinct skill set required to use Contrast Paints but they can look very good once the technique is nailed down. Frustratingly, each individual colour behaves slightly differently (or perhaps that just makes things a bit more fun!?)
