Help vs Guard

Just looking for some general advice for taking on the might of the Imperial Guard. My regular opponent uses them exclusively and although we only play super laid back friendly games, I’m pretty much always tabled by around turn 3.

 

He’s a better, more experienced player than me so I’m not expecting to win but not being wiped out so quick would be nice for a change!

 

He runs Plasma Executioners and Demolishers, a mix of heavy weapons teams with las and motors and then lots of Guardsmen with some Plasma. He’s Cadian and seems to have re-rolls coming out of his ears as well as so many ways to boost his BS.

 

I’ve mostly built my AdMech as a shooting army but realise you can’t out shoot the Guard... so as I probably need to buy some new units, what’s some good units/tactics to use against Guard?

 

I currently have 4x robots, Cawl, 1x Onager, 2x TPD, 2x TPE, 10x Rangers, 20x Vanguard, 6x Plas Destroyers, 1x Dragoon, 5x Stave Priests and 5x Inflitrators. I’ll definitely be getting a Skopius at Christmas but not sure what build.

Right off the bat a second Onager would help, especially having both being neurolasers. The pair give each other a re-roll on their save. They will help on the tank front. 

 

With the Skorpnis, taking the tank version and the belleros cannon will help with the heavy weapon teams as it wounds on 2+ and is D2, so will kill teams outright. Also doesn't need line of sight so can hit the mortars.

 

What are your bots armed with?

 

Also if you have snipers, use them. If not add them in. The commanders giving orders can be a pain but you have the tools to take them out. That will lower his buffs.

Yeah, have had another Start Collecting on the list for a while but there’s always something else to buy! Good to know about the Skorpius, thanks.

 

Robots are full Phosphor. They usually do well in a Cawl castle if they aren’t all destroyed first turn (which he seems to get most of the time...) but they are so expensive points wise. Am thinking of dropping them to try something new.

 

I do have three Arq snipers but he tends to hide his officers and use vox. His tanks tend to be in a separate Pask detachment.

 

Oh, I should have added: I run Mars as my Forgeworld.

Pask is the Cadian tank commander, not much there other then that should be the main target to lower his high BS.

 

Snipers then should hit the weapon teams then, since they do d3 damage, 50/50 you'll one shot them. Do that to the las teams and that gives your skorpis a chance to hit the mortars

 

Some Ironstriders/more Dragoons could help, hit an infantry heavy flank. Same with the infiltrators.

 

Issue is that Cadian is good for plasma because they get that free re-roll 1s if they don't move. Though this gives you a better chance to box him in.

 

I'll look into the bot tactics, but a nice melee force would help.

Is it worth expanding the Sicarians, Priests or add some fist bots?

 

Would you bother with a transport for the Priests? Seems to me there would need to be a few otherwise he can easily focus each one.

 

Ha! He’s just sent me a photo of the 12x Bullgryns with shields he’s finished painting. He’s looking to switch up our static shooting matches too!

You can point one robot double shooting at a guard squad and delete it. Even single shooting you’ll mow them down. Remove his infantry and you remove his ability to score and hold objectives.

 

His out of LOS shooting is harsh. Bring your Skorpius tanks to even the score and even pull ahead if you can keep them healed. Mashing his mortar teams is awesome.

 

Infiltrators do work against guard. Consider two squads of 5 instead of one ten if not playing mars. If you play mars use ten and then fish for mortals against whatever ails you.

 

Beware ogryn/bullgryn. Your arc claw breachers or grav destroyers work well but are still outmuscled.

 

TUA his characters if he exposes them. Low T guard targets are always choice for that gun.

 

Weep when he casts spells.

 

Icarus for flyers and neutron for tank commanders. Remember the strat that gives your +2 to shoot skitarii works on your onagers also.
