Do most folks use a smash captain like a guided missile and point him directly at the biggest threat, or will it be worthwhile keeping him near a firebase for protection and to maximise the ap bonus on heavy weapons T1 before moving him upfield or redeploying via UWoF?

I think it depends on the opponent. Against opponents who have combat monsters of their own, I tend to hold him back a bit. You don't need to burn CPs on UWOF and DOA to close the gap with a Gallant when you know it will be coming to you.

On the other hand, if your opponent has something like a Knight Crusader that will shoot big chunks out of your army if not dealt with quickly, then I use him as a self-guiding missile and try to take it out early.
