Kierdale
For inspirational purposes, I dug out these images from the three RT-era Ork sourcebooks. I’ll post more as and when I can (banners, little fluff images, etc.) but for starters some colour sections on the clans... Blood Axes Evil Sunz Bad Moons Death Skulls Snake-Bites Goffs And, something you don’t see anymore: the Ork Waa-totem. I’m not sure how clearly this will come out. andes, toaae, Azaiel and 7 others 10 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360436-old-ork-fluff-and-images-for-inspiration/ Share on other sites
The_Chaplain
Oh boy, I hope you can find some old RT/Gorkamorka style pennant banners for bikes. Magos Takatus
I remember starting my Ork army based on a colour swatch in the 2nd edition codex but I didn't know there was a Rogue Trader image of a Blood Axe wearing that camo! As you can tell, I am delighted to see where that came from. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360436-old-ork-fluff-and-images-for-inspiration/#findComment-5443330 Share on other sites
Kierdale
Banners. First up coloured ones. Lots of the black-and-white print’em-and-use’em ones to come. Kierdale
These probably aren’t very clear but I hope they give some ideas. Firstly all kinds of banners (clans, roles, etc.) Snakebite banners Blood Axe banners More, including Human mercenary Evil Sunz Evil Sunz bikers Bad Moons Death Skulls And then Freebooters (back when Freebooters meant all kinds of renegade Orks, not just Flash Gitz) mydrum, Magos Takatus and Akylas 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360436-old-ork-fluff-and-images-for-inspiration/#findComment-5443638 Share on other sites
Kierdale
Ork Genestealer hybrids Flash Gitz And lastly another Flash Gitz one and Bad Moon Next up, when I get the chance, some of the funny fluff images for each unit (and of each clan). Magos Takatus
That is a hefty section on banners! I remember Bannerhammer from when I first started in the hobby but it seems to be much more so prior to second edition. I'm quite tempted to put in the odd banner here and there in my army now, the tough part is not making it look out of place. I suppose it's harder to justify them in a Blood Axe force than say, Bad Moons who are more inclined to show off their opulence. Edit: I suppose banners might be a bit much but I could try freehand on my larger Ork vehicles. Kierdale
The fluff images from the 1st edition armylists. Starting with Goffs: Back when warbosses had retinues of nobs and oddboys accompanying them. Each Oddboy accompanied by at least one grot is a lovely touch I’ll have to try to remember and do. Back when weirdboyz we’re always accompanied by minderz (often the three Orks moulded as one model). This is something I’m trying to do in my army. Back in theses days Ork armies had one big boyz mob, and other smaller ones. And all clans had access to wild mobs of feral/young Orks And you could have Ogryn mobs Akylas and toaae 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360436-old-ork-fluff-and-images-for-inspiration/#findComment-5444145 Share on other sites
Kierdale
And Snakebites I like that one of the Mad Boyz is prone. Likely he just fell over or was pushed...but perhaps he’s deliberately prone. Quite mad. For an Ork. That last one inspires me to make some squig catapults as lobbas. Kierdale
Blood Axe If I remember correctly the flags the golf caddy grot is carrying were so painboys could mark casualties as theirs (for working on post-battle...or simply claiming the teeth from corpses). Lord_Caerolion
I love how the old artwork couldn't agree what Ork heads actually looked like. Most of the images in there have them with an actually square head, others have more of the "lantern jaw", but there was also a lot of artwork that had them as almost having snouts, with the massive jaws actually extending forwards. Magos Takatus
My brother once had some of those 1st ed plastic Orks. I liked the power claws in that kit. Sometimes I would quite like some like that in the modern kits. Kierdale
Many thanks for posting these! Now I have to do a gretchin with flagpoles for my future Dok. :D You’re welcome! If they inspire anyone, that’s great.I got a pack of Nobs some time back that I don’t really need so might make them into oddboys, starting with a painboy and some grot servants :D Death Skulls Akylas 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360436-old-ork-fluff-and-images-for-inspiration/#findComment-5445720 Share on other sites
Lord_Caerolion
Always found it weird that they didn't give Death Skulls more Meks. I can understand the logic for more Runtherds, but could never understand why they had more Painboyz, other than "the Runtherds and Meks combo was already used". Kierdale
Freebooterz First up is Ork Freebooter Pirates. Tribeless, clanless rogues. One could have a heavy weapon while the rest were armed with bolters or bolt pistols and melee weapons (though all could upgrade their melee weapons. A squad full of power klaws, etc.). The kaptin could have pretty much any weapons he wanted, including a second heavy weapon for the squad if you wanted. Could also have a force field. Flash Gitz were Freebooter pirates who hit the big time. Powered armour, bioniks, kustom weapons, force fields and heavy weapons for all if you wanted. Khorne’s Stormboyz - Stormboys who didn’t grow out of being stormboys, and were drawn to the worship of Khorne: the martial virtues he embodies...and the bloodshed. The Kaptin could even have Chaos rewards. Great modelling opportunities there! Outcast oddboys - oddboys usually get along with each other better than with ‘normal’ orks, and sometimes leave their tribe/warband and club together. This unit gave you access to all four types. Renegade mekboyz - meks who banded together in a big Waaa-Ork and, after the campaign ended, decided to stick together. Gretchin Bandits - classic! Armed with blunderbusses and could have shotguns, stub guns, muskets and grenades. The kaptin could even have a force field and bioniks. Renegade Runtmaster - and runtherdz. Followers of the deranged runtmaster philosopher Naflug, who created super-runtz: super-snots and super-grots...which allowed you to buy upgrades snotlings and gretchin. Bad Docs - accompanied by S6 T2 W2 squig-brained Orks! Warphead - exposed so much they become addicted to warp power. Accompanied by madboyz. Ork-Genestealer hybrids. And lastly an outcast retinue (warboss, nobs and oddboys). Those who’ve been deposed, fallen out of favour with the clan/tribe, etc. and go merc.
