Yesterday i had a Contemptor with Lascannon trying to shoot at a Ork character.

Between the two models there was a ongoing Close Combat between two infantry units.

The Ork player said i couldn't shoot at his character because he wasn't the closest.

I said i couldn't shoot at the closest unit because it was in Combat so the character become the closest target.

What is the correct interpretation of the rules ? Thanks in advance.

Note : i was in a inverted situation one week ago against a veteran who shooted at my character while there was a closest CC unit.

The fact that you can't shoot at the closest target, whether it's due a close combat or lack of Line of Sight, doesn't allow you to shoot at the character, so the Ork player is right.

Q: If a model cannot shoot at the closest visible enemy unit for some reason (e.g. it is within 1" of one of your units) but the next closest visible enemy unit is a Character, can that model then target the character? A: No.
