IronDreddKnight
So I got an ultra sonic cleaner for Xmas with the intention of speeding up paint stripping my marines. I wanted to ask for advice on what liquid would be best to use? I’ve been using mephilated spirit and scrubbing with a tooth brush up to now. But that’s a painfully slow process. Is mephilated spirit ok to use in a ultra sonic cleaner? Evil Eye
I use a mixture of Isopropynol (I may have spelled that wrong) alcohol, water, and a tiny bit of Mr. Thinner. Mind you, that was for cleaning my airbrush and thus I'd suggest leaving out the thinner. Laughingman
If you want to strip models 90%+ isopropyl alcohol (70+ percent does not work as well). combined with a sonic cleaner will strip models in minutes. Be wary of resin though, if you let the alcohol heat up it will cause warping. IronDreddKnight
Isopropyl alcohol, brilliant thank you both for the fast reply. Does this still need some brushing? And does it need watering down at all? Fajita Fan
I used a Q-tip on some recessed areas when stripping with alcohol, it went much quicker than simple green. sarabando
neat iso will strip paint in seconds if you are going to leave it to run for a bit id add water mainly due to Iso being quiet expensive. Marshal Vespasian
For stripping minis Windex or cheap methylated Spirits Work Like a Charm and are cheap. Just dont Take a whiff when opening The cleaner. For cleaning your Airbrush use Airbrush cleaner and water. Everything else Attacks the Chrome, which might disrupt the Paint flow Edited December 28, 2019 by Marshal Vespasian IronDreddKnight 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360766-ultra-sonic-cleaner-what%E2%80%99s-best-to-use-with-it/#findComment-5452110 Share on other sites

Thanks for the heads up, I’d ordered a litre from amazon, I’ll definitely be canceling that now. I’ve used mephilated spirit while stripping by hand, I’ll just stick to it :) Thanks again forge catch Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/360766-ultra-sonic-cleaner-what%E2%80%99s-best-to-use-with-it/#findComment-5452127 Share on other sites

Depending on the actual proof its flash point is still 12°C so just be careful, probably best to use a jar or watertight bag method as discussed above if you are worried. Flashpoint is the temperature at which the vapours ignite when a source of ignition is around. If your using it in one of these I expect boiling point would be more appropriate than flashpoint. But as others have said be careful with any flammable liquids. I’ve just purchased a ultrasonic cleaner myself so I’m interested in seeing how one works myself. Going to give it a go today if I get time. Laughingman
I've used (and continue to use) isopropyl alcohol in sonic cleaners... Probably hundreds of time without incident... Like I said if your worried, but the alcohol is some sort of sealed container and then put it in a water bath in the sonic cleaner... Mine only set to work for five minutes at a time to prevent overheating anyway.
