I'm trying to build a 1500 point list that looks something like what I always longed to build back in the Codex: Witchhunters glory days. I'm doing 1500 because that's the number for Astronomi-con, the narrative-focused tournament I want to take it to. That event has a limit of three detachments (which I guess is fairly common). This is what I'm thinking of so far:

Inquisition - Vanguard Detachment

HQ

Inquisitor Karamazov [115]

ELITES

Acolyte, bolt Pistol, chainsword [8]

Acolyte, bolt pistol, chainsword [8]

Acolytes x4, plasma gun x3, Bolter [65]

Astra Militarum Battalion Detachment

HQ

Tempestor Prime - Rod of command [40]

Tempestor Prime - Plasma pistol [40]

TROOP

Scions x8, flamer x2 (rides in a Taurox Prime) [68]

Scions x8, grenade launcher x2 (rides in a Taurox Prime) [62]

Scions x5, meltagun x2 [63]

Scions x5, plasma gun x2 [57]

Scions x8, meltagun x1 plasma gun x1, power sword [85]

ELITE

Militarum Tempestus Command Squad, 3x meltagun [78]

FLYER

Valkyrie, hell strike missiles, multilaser [117]

TRANSPORTS

Taurox Prime, gatling cannon, 2x hotshot volley guns [114]

Taurox Prime, missile launcher, 2x auto cannons [130]

Adepta Sororitas - Spearhead Detachment

HQ

Missionary, bolt pistol and shotgun [38]

NO FORCE ORG SLOT

Crusaders x6 [78]

HEAVY

Penitent Engine [56]

Penitent Engine [56]

Exorcist, Exorcist Missile Launcher, Heavy bolter [170]

TOTAL = 1448

So that's what I have so far, 50 points to play with if we like the setup so far. Probably boost the crusaders up to 10? Unless I scrounge points (maybe by dumping the third 8-man Scion squad who are intended to be a fluffy foot escort for Soulis/Karamazov) to get them inside an immolator of some flavour, and then buy some more acolytes or some arcoflagellants.

Interested in thoughts from both fluff and usefulness perspective. The army doesn't need to be great, I just want it to not be terribad. And I haven't played any 8th ed yet so don't have a grip on it at all. But I think this would have been a fun and fluffy list in C:WH days.

Forgot to add power sword to 5th Scion squad
I like the list, thematically. As far as effectiveness, I’d up the Gatling taurox to missiles, replace the melta on Solis’ honor guard with a plasma, and then get as many more crusaders as you can.

Cool thanks. Sounds doable.

I’m going to check fire on more crusaders until I see the new arcoflagellant rules. It seems this is the only thing that hasn’t been leaked is the arco rules but reviewers say they’re pretty tough/good.

Crusaders are about toughness. That 3++ takes them far. However, 2 S3 attacks can only do so much to kill the enemies. Arcos drop 2d3 S5 attacks, so they shred things but a 5+ fnp isn’t much once an enemy wants them dead.

Summed up: Toughness vs Strength

The one question that keeps recurring in my mind ... is the lone Exorcist a mistake? Will it give me some much-needed AT punch, or will it just be a bullet magnet and quick to die since it is my only piece of stationary heavy armour and everything else is fast-moving. Is having a lone Exorcist sitting in the backfield actually practicable?

Or should I drop it in favour of a multimelta immolator, or a third and fourth Penitent engine, plus more more Arcos or Scion stuff?

I just feel like with this current setup it will just be sitting unsupported alone.

EDIT: I love the new model to bits, but just feel like it may not fit ... tough decision.

EDIT PART THE SECOND: After much thought I am intrigued by the idea of swapping the exorcist for a Multimelta Immolator and a third buzzsaw Penitent Engine plus reduce the GL squad to 5 so I can have a round 6 arcoflagellants to jam inside the immolator.

It makes me sad to pass by the amazing Exorcist model but an immolator using a Razorback kit, the FW Inquisition rhino doors and front hach, and multimelta and heavy bolter bitz would be a more effectife use of resources and more =][= themed than SoB.

The list has evolved a bit, and I think I'm pretty happy with this pending some play testing. A BIG part of the scoring in the event I intend this for is for fluffiness. After each battle, players must  rate their opponent on their army’s adherence to the background of the 40k universe and the story their army is trying to portray on a scale of 0-5. Over 5 games that's 25 points and the entire tournament is scored on 125 points so it's a significant chunk. Comments on the list's "adherence to the background of the 40k universe and the story their army is trying to portray" appreciated as well.

Not sure what to do with the remaining 10 points. Crusader max unit size is 6 in Codex: Adepta Sororitas ... just realized in comparing them to the Astra Militarum variety that the latter may be better since they have Acts of Faith and the AS variety do not? Has this been FAQ'ed out? Will taking Crusaders cost me the Militarum Tempestus doctrine? Would it be seen as "gaming the system" to take AM Crusaders instead of AS Crusaders?
