Trying to understand this Warlord Trait...

In addition to this Warlord Trait, this Warlord has one randomly generated Chaos Space Marine Warlord Trait from Codex: Chaos Space Marines. If this Warlord is destroyed, you can immediately select another ALPHA LEGION CHARACTER model from your army to take their place and generate a Warlord Trait for them (including this one). If the mission you are playing grants victory points for destroying the enemy Warlord, your opponent will only achieve that objective if all of the ALPHA LEGION CHARACTER models from your army have been destroyed.

I understand that at the start you roll a d6 and get that Warlord trait from CSM codex, and when that Warlord dies it moves onto one you wish to put it on.

But then it says you can generate a Warlord Trait, without rolling for it, or from CSM codex (including this one)... But reading that it also means that i get to Roll for another Warlord trait as the I Am Alpharius trait says i get another randomly generated CSM codex warlord trait, so does that mean i pick a Warlord trait from anywhere, then get I Am Alpharius and then roll for a random Warlord trait?

I might be reading this wrong but going with wording that is how its worded.

If you have the 'I Am Alpharius' then you roll on the standard CSM warlord trait table for the additional trait to go with the Alpharius one.

This doesnt over ride the normal way of getting a warlord trait - ie either roll D6 on codex list, D3 on Rule book list, D1 on subfaction list (;p) or just pick one of the 10 - just that once you have this trait you roll on the CSM table.

Yes but that doesnt answer the part when the Warlord dies and it gets moved on.

ok, miss read the question...

So my read of it is... your warlord with alphariaus dies - pick another character to be your warlord, and follow the normal way of getting a warlord trait - ie pick a table and roll on it OR just pick the warlord trait.  So yes you can just pick I'm Aplhariaus again and then roll on the CSM table.

Irrespective of if you pick the Alphariaus trait a 2nd time your opponent still needs to kill all your characters to get that VP.

Yes but am i right to say, that when my Warlord dies on my first daemon prince, i then give Clandstine (alpha legion warlord trait) on to them, then he gets I am Alpharius, to then also roll on the d6 warlord traits from the codex?

Meaning that he would have Clandstine + I am Alpharius + 1 of the warlord traits?

Thats what i am trying to understand.

If that is the correct and complete wording from OP, i would suggest that the NEW warlord can take "I am Alpharius" and another.

If it were to say :

"In addition to this Warlord Trait, this Warlord has one randomly generated Chaos Space Marine Warlord Trait from Codex: Chaos Space Marines. If this Warlord is destroyed, you can immediately select another ALPHA LEGION CHARACTER model from your army to take their place and generate a Warlord Trait for them. If you choose for this model to then have this trait, they DO NOT generate a second warlord trait."

This is the OR, there is no "if". The wording is:

I am Alpharius

In addition to this Warlord Trait, this Warlord has one randomly generated Chaos Space Marine Warlord Trait from Codex: Chaos Space Marines. If this Warlord is destroyed, you can immediately select another ALPHA LEGION CHARACTER model from your army to take their place and generate a Warlord Trait for them (including this one). Correct. You can choose any WL trait. If you choose I Am Apharius, which allows you to generate a second WL trait.

You don't however, as was asked above, get to generate a new WL trait AND get I Am Alpharius along with the WL trait that comes with it, resulting in I Am Alpharius and 2 other WL traits.

You can now see why im so confused with this Warlord Trait, as the way its worded i get I am Alpharius and 2 other warlord traits on my 2nd character when the main warlord dies...

Except it doesn't. By the exact wording the process goes like this:

1 - Initial Warlord is given I am Alpharius and generates a (1) random additional Warlord Trait.

2 - Warlord is killed.

3 - You select another Alpha Legion Character to become the new Warlord.

4 - You generate a Warlord Trait for your new Warlord.

5 - If you chose I am Alpharius as his Warlord Trait then you generate a (1) random additional Warlord Trait.

6 - If you continue to choose I am Alpharius and that/those Character(s) is/are killed then you repeat the process and may continue to do so until you run out of Alpha Legion Characters.

7 - If you choose a different Warlord trait, then the chain will end upon that Character's death.

That makes more sense, thank you.

But what if the character you select in step three already has a warlord trait (because of field commander, for example)?

Do you then give them an additional warlord trait (Alpharius), which itself generates a third warlord trait?

Seems that would be the exception to the rule, yeah. However I can't think of any Warlord Trait combination that would be worth sacrificing a character for so it's not that exploitable anyway.

Yes, but it's no more powerful than the Loyalists that can have 2 traits on their Warlord via a Strategem.

In this case the dude would technically have 3 traits, but I Am Alpharius doesn't actually do anything itself other than trigger the hot potato chain on Slay the Warlord.
