Hi all,

I've done a little bit of painting before, mostly the Island of Blood Warhammer Fantasy set (almost done with the Skaven, never touched the filthy Elves), as well some of me and my mates board games like Shadows over Camelot, Eclipse, Gloomhaven etc. I really enjoy it! I do tend to take long breaks here and there (like months), but I don't mind, and right now I'm looking to have a side project I can spend a long time on.

So I decided to invest in Warhammer 40k. More precisely two of the following four armies: Space Marines, Orks, Astra Militarum and T'au. I want two different armies for a couple of reasons, I want a bit of variation in my project, and once it's done I'd like to play them with my friends. I think those four factions all look interesting to paint, and have an enjoyable flavor to their lore.

Any suggestions for what combo of armies I should invest in, and if so, what sets should I purchase first?  To me, the "Start Collecting" sets at 90$ look like good value, with plenty of models and a bit of variation. Also, ideally the two armies I paint are fun to play against each other. I'm looking to spend about 100$-150$ on each army.

Thanks for any suggestions! Now back to my lovely little rat army, and finish it up.

Welcome to this side of the hobby!

Just food for thought - have you looked at Kill Team ?  The cost would easily reach into your budget by comparison to a 40k army in full, and you might even be able to afford the rulebooks to boot!  It will give you a great flavouring to the armies and if you like the ones that come in the starting boxes you'll get some lovely scenery too.

You can now add commanders and elites to your Kill Teams as well, allowing you to grow the army at a steady pace until you've enough for a full game of 8th edition 40k.

I have indeed considered Kill Team, and it's even got Space Marines and T'au. But it's got a low miniature/money ratio, it seems to me, all though the scenery does add a bit extra to it.

I'd rather go for a couple of the "Start Collecting" boxes and maybe a couple of extra characters or squad packs. I don't mind spending quite a bit of money on it, but I don't want to regret my choice of armies either. Thanks for the suggestion though, I did consider both Kill Team and Blood Bowl, so you aren't too far off.

Welcome to the hobby!! Everyone is really cool and helpful feel free to ask any and all types of questions regardless if you feel like they're too noobish to ask. I too returned after a 20 year break found myself worried if asking overly noobish questions but everyone has been super helpful and given great feedback!

Welcome to the B&C and 40k! It's best not to start off too big in scope so while you may plan to get several armies better to start with one or two so you can focus on them, and prevent the build up of a plastic mountain - it also means you're not stuck if you change your mind on an army later :tu: It would be worth thinking about what type of army/list you'd like to play as that can inform the decision where to start.

For armies that are good verses each other you won't get better than the classic Guard vs Orks! They're also very different to paint and play so offer plenty of variety so this would be my suggestion :) If you go Guard, you'll need to report in to the barracks for inspection without delay - the commissariat will be disappointed otherwise ;)

Whatever you go for, make sure to check the box sets for savings as these are really good when starting an army as you need everything so can't go wrong :P You can also make some further savings by shopping from online stores :D

The Astra Militarium is probably the faction that appeals to me the most, to be honest. I've always loved "rank and file" human armies with a militaristic/brutalist flavor. And Orks vs Humans does appeal quite a bit.

I'll think on it some more, and order later tonight. But I've pretty much settled on paying my respect to the Commissariat.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.
