omo667
As in title. I would not be surprised by Blood Angels, given by the fact that they practice art in their free time (e.g. sculpting, painting). Same with Ultramarines, given they come from "civilized" area - though it would be funny to read about an Ultramarine unable to play e.g. zither or lute due to his fingers being too large. This question is (unfortunately) caused by me seeing a video of Ultramarine playing a saxophone - youtube link Mazer Rackham 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361378-do-space-marines-play-musical-instruments/ Share on other sites
Fajita Fan
I don't remember if he had them in his sanctum for sure but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Perturabo could play music. Vykes
If memory serves, Captain Zephon (30K blood angel) played the harp and that sort of thing was encouraged by the 9th back in the days of yore. MARK0SIAN
Before the Heresy the Emperor’s children (including Fulgrim) played instruments in their quest for perfection. They’ve now taken it to the extreme with noise marines :) Loken also talked about how the Astartes in the Luna Wolves were encouraged to better themselves so that they could lead richer lives when the Crusade was concluded and they weren’t going to be fighting all the time. In his case it was more of an education but it’s not hard to imagine learning an instrument being a route they could take. I also seem to have a hazy memory of one of the Space Wolves in the Ragnar series playing some kind of instrument but I’m a bit shaky there so could be wrong. Panzer
Depends on the chapter and the individual Marine. However it definitely wouldn't be out of character for a Blood Angel Marine (though they prefer forms of art that actually create something iirc) or an Emperor's Children Marine. Depending on the instrument it would definitely have to be adjusted to the size of a Marine, however Marines aren't clumsy giants. They can be incredibly delicate with their hands if they want to. So with some trying and effort I'm sure that an Ultramarine could play most of any regular sized instrument as well. If it's regular-sized instruments, it doesn't matter how delicate they are if their fingers are too large to not hit multiple keys at a time, in the case of woodwind/brass instruments, unless they make some sort of rig that presses the keys for them. Mendi Warrior
All space marines know how to use bolters. The sound of bolter fire tearing through heretics and foul xenos is music to the ears of the Emperor and His children. Hence all space marines do play musical instruments. The Unseen
Those commenting about giant fingers... Theres nothing stopping people creating instruments sized for giant hands, we just don't, because we don't have giants who want to play instruments. Would it be difficult to get the tuning right for say a flute thats much bigger than a traditional flute? Sure. But definitely not impossible. But I would say yes, absolutely, depending on chapter and homeworld. jeremy1391 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361378-do-space-marines-play-musical-instruments/#findComment-5465164 Share on other sites

Doghouse
I think it depends on how GW has changed the lore of the regimes of an Astartes. There used to be an account of how each marine spends every second of every day while not in battle and out of 24 hours I think they had 15 minutes personal time. The idea was that idle hands leads to chaos kind of thing. Now with more modern stuff it feels like, especiially from the black library stuff which is understandable, Astartes are often portrayed in a more statesman humanised form so that people can relate to them. While I personally see them as almost inhuman heavily indoctrinated warriors because that is what appeals to me personally but given the changes in more recent years it's not unthinkable to have other pursuits. I think this lends itself well to the mentality of the Great Crusade where the Astartes argueably had far more free will which to me is what lead to the later Heresy. But with the advent of the Primaris these guys have been portrayed initially as being much more like their crusade era counterparts. So really it boils down to interpretation by you as the outsider looking in. Panzer
Marines being out and fighting 24/7 definitely doesn't fit with Blood Angels doing arts stuff or Ultramarines doing politics or Librarians doing their whole Librarian thing that's not being a space wizard etc. So apparently Marines do have quite some time away from the battlefields too. Doghouse
I found a copy of the daily regime taken directly from 3rd edition that was what I was thinking of and some might find interesting but probably is a bit out of date these days. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Daily_rituals_of_a_Space_Marine It was originally put in place to show how they were kept busy and monitored to deny temptations. I can't remember seeing anything like that in modern texts so take it as you will I guess. I can't see why even if this was still in place that they couldn't fit in arts and crafts band practice in somewhere. :D In all seriousness though Guiliman seems to be keen on the Golden Era warrior statesman approach for the marines so it's not out of the question I guess. Battle hymns have always been fairly common historically speaking so there is room for musical instruments in some form. Personally I think a Terminator teleporting in while playing the bagpipes would be terrifying... :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361378-do-space-marines-play-musical-instruments/#findComment-5466357 Share on other sites

Bjorn Firewalker
Personally I think a Terminator teleporting in while playing the bagpipes would be terrifying...Better make it a set of bagpipes with an integral flamer and bolt rifle, from The World Is Not Enough. The Terminator can play AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" when he arrives, to stun the enemy. Aothaine
I would say that it depends entirely on the chapter and their culture. I can see the Ultramarines and Blood Angels playing instruments on their free time. But I think it would also have more to do with individuals rather than chapters. I am almost positive there are space marine musicians out there that perform music that is beautiful to their super powered senses but possibly not even able to be heard by mortal senses.
