NTaW
Welcome to the Necron Unit of the Week Series! Each week a different unit will be highlighted for discussion until we have amalgamated a full list of our available options and their relevant tactics as 8th edition evolves. We already have a few previous entries but things change as FAQs and Chapter Approved books get released and we playtest new ideas so please feel free to reopen a topic when new options become relevant for discussion. Please keep in mind this isn't to lament the status of featured units or compare them to others but to try and find their potential for all types of gameplay. Comments that do not adhere to this goal will be removed as they are not constructive to the topic. This week’s unit is: As a loose guide, here are some questions we could answer to help out any who happen upon our metallic corner of the B&C: Do you play the Obelisk with a Dynasty Code? How useful is the Gravity Pulse ability? Do you deploy it with your army or from reserve? What role do you typically use the Obelisk in? Now over to you! Tyriks
I love the Obelisk model. It's not great right now, unfortunately. The Gravity Pulse is pretty much the only reason to take one over a Tesseract Vault, since they have the same guns. I've never played one with a Dynasty so I have no input on that front. When Gravity Pulse goes off it can be a lot of fun (for the Necron player, anyway) but it's not very reliable unless you know you are playing against a lot of <FLY> units. Kaldoth
It's a very situational unit, but against Harlequins and Jetbike Eldar spam it can be an absolute menace. If you're going to deep strike it, then I'd suggest Mephrit to get the AP on the guns. If you're going to start it on the board, go Nephrekh for the auto 6 advance. It moves incredibly slow at its top profile so having it advance 6 each turn is a huge boon. If you're going to take one I suggest doing so in 2k+ games so you've got lots of other targets. Without an invul or QS, it's easy to shoot off the board, so you're going to want lots of other high threat targets for your opponent to shoot at.
