Lasairiona
Hi everybody!I played 40K from third to fifth editions. My armies have departed from this world long ago. Flashforward and now I'm a mother of two. Recently, my young adepts came running to tell me and their dad about this 'new' game they discovered. Hahaha! They couldn't believe I played before and that I'd want to play with them. So, now I'm checking out GW online for armies to choose. I see the expense this can lead to, so I'm thinking we'll have two teams and two armies. We'll be getting the rule book, two codex books, and a few models apiece. I want them to take the hobby slowly to make sure they're serious about playing it.I'll be lurking around to find out any tips you have. Thanks! MegaVolt87
I recommend 2nd hand mini's off places like ebay for much less investment, easy to build stuff. Also the battleforces are good value to jump in at small points games to start. Boytoy
i'll second that, get some used stuff. you should be able to find a warhammer buy/sell/trade fb page for your area. with luck, you can find some grey models so your adepts can get some painting practice. happy gaming! WarriorFish
Welcome to the B&C and back to the hobby Starting off slow is what everyone should do; not least due to assembly and painting time but what we should do and what happens aren't always the same Second hand would be a great way to save money and get the neophytes trained up, but there's also online resellers to make savings if you're after new or models not available/reasonable second hand. What armies are you thinking of getting? Are you looking for a theme for the two opposing forces, or just what takes your (or rather their?) fancy? The game has changed much since 5th, but you'll be glad to know the core will be familiar enough and 8th is more streamlined so will be easier to pick up. lhg033
hi, My son is just starting out - he's 'inherited' some of my older stuff as a starting point to test if he liked the modelling/painting side before we decided to spend any money on dedicated stuff for him if you are happy with the models i'd recommend any of the starter sets (in order of cost/size) First strike - £25 RRP know no fear - know no fear - £50 RRP Dark imperium - £95 You should be able to find them new for 20-25% cheaper via a 3rd party (my pick is Darksphere but there are lots to choose from) Personally I would say these are the best starter boxes GW have ever made. my son and I have spent a few times playing through the starter games in first strike. He got Know no Fear for Christmas and now has modest space marine and death guard forces. failing that - the start collecting boxes are brilliant for a small force for a given faction The paint and tools sets are pretty good starting points for painting/modelling. I really, really recommend a mold line remover vs a hobby knife for kids to clean up models. Greatly reduced potential for accidental injuries. Lasairiona
MegaVolt87 & Boytoy: 2nd hand minis and online retail spots seem like a sensible way to go. Naturally there is the "they're cheaper so lets buy MORE!" syndrome to reign in. WarriorFish: So far their interests are in Adeptus Custodes, Adeptus Mechanicus, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Deathwatch, Eldar, Necrons, Orks, Space Wolves, Tau, and Tyranids. Thank goodness the list is getting narrowed down. I don't mind the variety or even the thought of a few small armies, but I want to see how focused they're going to be first. lhg033: Battle forces and starter sets with a small force would be perfect. Two of us can start building one army while the other two start another army. I'll have to check out my local DIY craft store for hobby tools to see what is available. Slow and steady wins the race! I think giving them the incentive to build and paint a small group of models now in order to get more models later will work best. I remember the fun of buying a ton of models for an army turned into frustration at my laziness or feelings of being overwhelmed as newer models came out and I still had a pile of unbuilt plastic. Paint bottles will be collected and purchased as we go. Thanks for your insights and suggestions! WarriorFish
So, only a few armies then... :P Maybe they can filter it by choosing how they'd like to play, or the models they like the most? Some of these armies have the snap fit small boxes available, could be an inexpensive way to get tasters and painting practice in Mandragora 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361566-the-family-that-plays-together-slays-together/#findComment-5469606 Share on other sites

This makes perfect sense to me. By the Emperor! Oh what a savings! Ladies and gentlemen, my 'biggest kid'. Sweetie? Don't think your charm is going to get you any extra models, Adept-3. That's right, the two younger adepts outrank you. And get that BA successor avatar off your account. I've only counted one vote for BA so you need one more to form your team. Votes shall be counted in the following order: Adept-1 and Adept-2 Myself, the Imperial Majestrix (royal trumpets sound!) Adept-3 So, only a few armies then... Maybe they can filter it by choosing how they'd like to play, or the models they like the most? Some of these armies have the snap fit small boxes available, could be an inexpensive way to get tasters and painting practice in Yes, fortunately only a few. I know of one adept (ahem) trying to squeeze a third army in, but I know how to curb that. I just have to ask the other adepts if they wouldn't mind having fewer models for their armies. Democracy in action. We plan to check out the forums of the armies here and read the feedback and opinions of them. The snap fits sound like a good tester, thank you! That is plain evil, using our children's greed over my own. Very well, very well. I may have been thwarted this time, but I say I will try again and fail so mark my words! Now I must bribe, I mean, confer with the other adepts. WarriorFish
Fear not Mandragora, on the B&C all are equal Once you've settled on your armies there's a home for each here where you will find detailed help and advice from fellow collectors. lhg033
Another thing to suggest, depending on the models you get and the level of effort you want to put in - MAGNETS!!! This will give you options for weapon swaps etc on key models so you can play around with them and vary your armies without having a reserve of different models for weapons options. There are a load of tutorials on here for this (if you are a fan of Dark angels look up Elmo's magnetised tanks for inspiration) Rare earth magnets are your friend - just keep them away from children/creatures that may try and eat them.. and sensitive electronics. Depending on where you are based - there is also a magazine series called Conquest. it is nearly at the end of its run in the uk but other countries are at various levels of release. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/350709-warhammer-conquest-issue-list/ a good source for cheap one off kits if you can find it - mostly from the Dark Imperium set but a few others thrown in. Not traditional 40k but there is also Kill team - boxset gives a tau squad, reiver squad and a load of terrain, Rules for all main factions (new factions since it was released e.g. sisters of battle are appearing in white dwarf) and a thick card game board. Not sure if you know much about it but it is small scale battles of up to a dozen or so models rules. So many armies, so little patience to pick only one (or two). I'm going to be reading a lot to get as many ideas as I can. Kill team and/or 40K will be up to the kids. As Lasariona said above, we need to see how much they want to immerse themselves. Of course, I'm hooked! Gederas
Welcome to both of you! Interesting to see a husband and wife team on here :lol:Side note: Now we have a Mandragora to get confused with Mandragola. Woo! Also regarding the army choices: Despite seeming contradictory, Custodes are an excellent army for someone starting. They're cheap to build to a decent force, and easy to paint (Retributor Armour [either the spray or paint] > Reikland Fleshshade Gloss > Drybrush of Sigmarite = Done with the armour ) Lasairiona and Mandragora 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361566-the-family-that-plays-together-slays-together/#findComment-5470222 Share on other sites
Mandragora
Gederas: Thank you very much. I promise not to use the same avatar as Mandragola. I appreciate the suggestions. If I could right now, I would be starting several armies. Many of them have nice detail and aesthetics.
