I’ve been thinking of something simple like killing fury warlord trait and claws of the black hunt. Should average 8 attacks, while having decent str, ap, damage and rerolling hit and wound.

I’m sure there’s some nastier builds out there though. What are folks using? Going with some of the other new relics?

I think the Nurgle fist Relic with a Combi-melta and the Killing Fury warlord trait. Stack some of the +1 to hit roll strats or prescience and he can maim or kill a Knight in 1 go.

The Slaanesh talons are good too, +d6 extra attacks. Take them with Flames of Spite warlord trait for mortal wounds on a 6+ to wound, add VotLW strat for +1 to wound, talons let you re-roll ALL wounds so re-roll the ones that don't inflict mortal wounds. They're better against infantry than the Nurgle Fist.

Personally, I've been running a Jump Lord with Flayer and combi-bolter and a DP with One Piece at a Time, Warpbolter, and Misery of the Meek to good success. The D2 property of Flayer makes it good on Primaris, Terminators, and characters. The fact that it causes models it kills to count twice in morale is also a big bonus against elite type units like Primaris and Terminators. Kill 3 Terminators, they now roll morale at 6 casualties with -1Ld from Terror Tactics, it hurts. He's taken out some decent size units and generally assassinated characters, last game he killed a Primaris Chaplain from deepstrike.

Personally I’m more inclined to go with the Flayer for the above reasons or for the Black claws than any of the daemon weapons, as I really don’t enjoy the 16% chance of hurting myself and then fighting with just punches every phase. Especially when the buffs you get for that risk are fairly mediocre compared to many of the available relics.

With most Daemon Weapons, I would agree the effects are mediocre. These two are the ones I think are actually worth the risk, though I completely understand not wanting to take it. A Thunderhammer that wounds always on 2s for FAR less points and a set of claws with +d6 attacks with re-roll all (not just failed) wounds. With the right setup, they are worth the risk to me, since hopefully a command re-roll can bail you out of trouble with the Daemon Weapon rule.

All in all, the Daemon Weapons have been rather disappointing. I can't see using any of the other 3 at all.

On a Lord I would probably take the claws like you say, on a Daemon Prince I actually might think about it first. The Daemon claws get you the rerolling wounds of lightning claws and then obviously the D6 extra attacks, which is really strong. But the malefic talons are flat 3 bonus attacks, so you figure with the daemon weapon on a 1 you’re screwed, on a 2-3 you’re not really getting extra attacks but then 4-6 it’s pretty great.

I feel like I’d rather just keep the regular talons and then use that emergency CP on Veterans of the Long War instead and go for casting Diabolic strength.

You’re definitely right though that these two are at least worth considering. Especially that Nurgle power fist.

I was just making my sword lord and I realized that there is one essential accessory for nightlords that we hadn’t covered yet... victims!

Just thinking some more on this... I’m thinking a smash nightlords

Mark of slaanesh

Intoxicating elixir

Warlord trait - killing fury

Thunderhammer

Should average 8 attacks at str 10, ap-3, D 3.

And , with leadership 9 and nightlords legion trait, he’ll generally be able to play “prey on the weak” to cancel that pesky -1 to hit from the thunderhammer. Add VoTLW to taste.

I am trying to revamp my old Night Lords army with a mix of 30k and 40k units. This sounds like as good a "count as" for my Sevatar surviving the warp to land in 40k as I can get since they still haven't ported HH rules into 8th edition. His chainglaive would probably hit as hard as a thunderhammer. Problem is I don't really know how to build a NL list in today's meta.
