Dorn watched the holo clip again the infiltrators as clear as day now he knew what to look for. Two strike cruisers tucked under a promethium tender from Saturn cloaked in what his tech adepts assured him were Aeldari holofields. A pair of gunships of his own legion passed not a kilo-metre from the intruders. No sooner had word of the actions at Calth reached him had the guardian of Terra moved to secure the mechanicum but his brother was one step ahead of him, his forces landing and spiriting away his traitorous allies. Who knew what forbidden technologies and foul deviances had been loaded on those vessels as they had blasted out of orbit. He growled such actions were below the man he once called Warmaster, more akin to the machinations of the twins not the heir of the great crusade.

A small strike force of the 16th legion The Daumutef operate in the quintessential manner of the legion striking hard and fast, where they differ is that their operations are often single-minded, extraction of valuable assets, prisoner acquisition, assassination, etc. They are often known to employ xenos technologies to subvert their opponent's most vigorous auspex. Unlike the reiver bands the retrieves often break contact sowing seeds of confusion as they reembark their transports as quickly as they arrived.

Fine works. Is the Dreadnought a proto-Defiler? Are you depicting the Sons of Horus amidst the Heresy, fighting to make the Warmaster the True Emperor of Mankind? (I noticed a Chaos star on the swordsman's cape.)

They are depicted here just after the news of the heresy becomes more widespread and the betrayal by the fabricator general of mars as they conducted a lightning fast raid onto mars herself to extract allied assets and banned technologies before loyalist forces could lock the red planet down.

Thanks that's what i was going for, and its a surprisingly fast method of painting the only time sink is the 24 hour dry time for the oils.

Great work all round, consistent gritty feel ties them to their back story and the contrast of the armour with the bases works beautifully. The defiler-nought is an awesome centrepiece

Like many have said great vision for the Daredo dred; it looks so much proportionally better now for the size of its firepower. The overall scheme and color of your armor vs the dusty mars red bases contrasts really well and works super nice together too.

 

Question, as I am not educated in oils, but what all does that entail? Do you mean like the old Testors model airplane paints and weathering kits?? Is that how you achieve that dusty worn sort of matte look and finish?

Like many have said great vision for the Daredo dred; it looks so much proportionally better now for the size of its firepower. The overall scheme and color of your armor vs the dusty mars red bases contrasts really well and works super nice together too.

its literally just artists oil paint. Once the mini is painted to a basic level i varnish it then slop some burnt umber on, then i use some white spirit to wash it down over the whole mini. I leave it like 5 mins to "dry" then i go back with a clean brush and some more white spirit and wipe it away from anywhere i dont want the brown. Then i leave it for 24 hours to propperly dry and then revarnish.

 

Once this stage is done i go back and re touch the mini with acrylics.

So, that’s what’s cresting all the brown shading and accumulated brownish verdigris in the recesses of your models?? Does the varnish create that flat matte affect then? yeah i use gloss and then matt varnish. I use MIG gloss and Vallejo mecha matt.

I took the dive and purchased the required supplies to try your weathering technique on some upcoming models. I think I’ll be safe and try a rhino first for practice before going at it with my current Raptors Tac. Sq. I’m painting.

 

When you say you ‘slop’ on the burnt umber; how literal or liberal are you being with the application ? Or do you suggest liberally applying it to only the crevices and bolts, etc?

 

Is the effect we’re seeing from an overall covering of burnt umber; or just accumulating in the crevices??

so what i do is add a new blobs in places like the knees top of the head etc. then use a brush soaked in white spirits and move it around the mini. Then i can use another clean brush to wipe it away from where i dont want it. If i can find a mini to do a vid on il try and get it uploaded.

best thing is that they oils stay workable for like 24 hours, so if you put too much on you can soak a cotton bud in white spirit and wipe it off again. But remember be gentle and go heavy on the varnish because that stuff will strip the acrylic clean off.

So make sure good coat of varnish and take it easy on the mineral spirits! Check.

 

do you recommend one thick coat of the glossy varnish initially or maybe two to three applications with thinner coats?

 

(Sorry if I am jacking your HOA thread into a ‘how to’ tutorial thread) / I don’t mean any disrespect, and am not trying to drive you crazy with questions; I’ve just never attempted this medium before!

 

Then the matte varnish seals it all in again once the oils have dried!?
