Lord Uglor
Good day all! I have not been terribly active online as of late, much to my chagrin. I have however been working on a myriad of stuff, both for my other threads (Lord Uglor does Gruphonicus and Lord Uglor does Imperial Fists) My current project that has been taking the lion's share fo my time is Necromunda. When Dark UIprising came out, I fell in love with the Zone Mortalis scenery. I started trying to get a set of tiles, and this proved to be a long and difficult task due to them being sold out every where. But perserverence prevailed, and I finally got 4 sets of tiles. Playing around with them out of the box, I noticed a few issues right away. First, it was the exact same tile. Second, when testing layouts on the tiles, though I loved that the walls and columns locked in place, I found that because the tiles did not, Lord Uglor and his sausage fingers caused the tiles to move and pull apart from one another. This would not do. The first issue was easily overcome, though not for the faint of heart. The second required a bit of a think on, but I have come up with a very easy, and easily repeated method for securing them. Magnets would be my savior! Examining the tiles, I realized they'd need a little beefing up. I determined approximately where I wanted to place the magnets, the glued in some sheet styrene to give support to the magnet. Then, due to reasons related to my first issue, I glued a large sheet of 1.5mm styrene to the back of the tile, enclosing it fully. Next, I went on to tinkercad.com and designed a drill guide with which I would ensure consistency of magnet placement. After using it for a few holes, I realized I needed to reinforce the guides with a bit of brass rod as my drilling was causing the holes to distort. I made a left and right side guide and went back to drilling. A simple clamp and mini drill allowed me to get all the magnets positioned in the exact same location. It is a slow process, due to the drill bit melting the plastic if I go too fast, but thus far I have managed to get 12 tiles drilled and magnetized. The key concern was ensuring the polarity for the magnets. Not a difficult thing, just something I had to constantly be aware of. For those interested, I used 1/8"x1/4" n52 cylinder magnets. Lord Uglor
Now that the second issue was solved, I had to tackle the first. I originally was going to just rely on painting. This would work, nut after a few tiles, I decided on a little more radical measure. First, though, let me show you the fruits of those first labors. These first four I based off the color of bases I was using for my kill team. Nice and easy. I changed up the color for the next few. The next few, I got a little more advanced. Lord Uglor
Now I got a little more creative. Looking to the card tiles in the original boxed set (or is it third? Anyway, the one before Dark Uprising) for inspiration, I made another set of tiles. A simple, small hole in the flooring, with a quickly designed and printed girder spanning the 'gap'. Next a little more. Using more of my girders, I spanned the gap with some of the barricade terrain, cut down and glued in place. I wanted to do more though. With this one, I went a little wild with the hole, and didn't have enough barricade to span it. Tinkercad.com to the rescue. I designed a suitably industrial door, then stuck them together in the program, then printed it in 2 pieces. Glued on the board and painted. I then had an idea. Between my son and I, we have all the currently released gangs. So far, we only have the Palanite Enforcers and Corpse Grinders painted, so I figured I'd give each gang a "home tile" as we completed them. The first up was the Enforcers tile. It's a little cleaner than the others, and the center is to be used for 'rescue the ganger' type missions, deep in enemy territory. I like this one, but I wanted more for my Corpse Grinders. Going back to tinkercad.com, and looking on thingiverse.com, I designed a rendering station. A close up. So this is where I stand now. I have 4 more tiles waiting to be painted, and these will be more of the home tile type for more of the gangs. One of my other sons is keen to use Goliaths, so perhaps this will be the next one I design. I plan on doing a bit more to the tiles as I have one of the Necromunda graffiti decal sheets coming, but we'll see. Let me know what you think. I'll be putting gangers in here eventually too. Gederas
Love the tiles (hate that you managed to get three boxes of them. I've only gotten the one since they came out and have been "Temporarily Out of Stock" since they went on pre-order....) The Corpse Grinder tile looks sick though! :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361976-lord-uglor-does-necromunda/#findComment-5477647 Share on other sites
Lord Uglor
@ Bjorn - Thanks! @ Gederas - Thanks! Just a small correction though, it's 4 boxes I've gotten so far. 1 through GW's website, 3 through eBay. Gonna keep looking for more too. Many ideas! tangoalphatwo
Wow. Simply amazing work on the terrain. Lord Uglor
@ Castigator - Thanks! My biggest issue right now is what color to use for the walls and columns themselves. I don't really know what scheme to do them in. I've done 2 test wall sections, one loosley based on the box colors, and one thats an inverse. I'm leaning more towards the inverse scheme, tan for the main walls and Russ greay for the insets, because I think it works better with both of the tile colors I have so far. I'll post some pics once I've decided on which of the two I'm going to go with for sure. Lord Uglor
Some painted models to show. My Corpse Grinders, as they sit right now. Went with an orange and grey scheme as I felt it was very industrial/guild like. This is my Butcher, Salt Bae. Next is my Cutter, Slash-o-tron 9000. Next, a Skinner, Bil the Buzzsaw. Yes, it's Bil, with one L. Another Skinner, Hank N Slash. My Initiates follow. Proper Fred Other Fred Randy Ugly Bob And finally, The Firestarter. I have a few more on the table, basecoated, but these are the completed ones. Brother Tyler
Great work all around. Your magnetization of the Zone Mortalis floor tiles reminds me of this old discussion. The jig for positioning and drilling the magnet holes was a great idea. Edited February 20, 2020 by Brother Tyler D'oh! Lord Uglor
@ tangoalphatwo - Thanks! I've always enjoyed naming gangers for Necromunda, and the sillier the better I find. @ Brother Tyler - Thanks! The prospect of drilling at least 128 holes and keeping them properly aligned is what made me consider the jig. I knew that if I did it by hand, I'd deviate on a few at least, and that'd ruin everything. I tried to look at your link, but it seems to be broken. Lord Uglor
@ Brother Tyler - Thank you for fixing the link. Looking through that thread, it kinda makes me a little sad I hadn't seen it prior to starting. The concept of 4 magnets per side so as to allow offset alignment was certainly something that hadn't occurred to me, but one which I wish had. So, I finished a couple more Corpse Grinders. First up, The Pig Sticker! And Gordon! Also, my first Goliath. I have named him Blasty McBolter, but I'm just painting them, my son is going to be using them once I'm finished painting all of them. Went with a Blue and Brass scheme as I didn't really want the red and steel look. After looking at the pics, I realize I may have to respray them with dullcote to bring down the shine. Lord Uglor
So, I've decided on the colour scheme of my walls now. I haven't painted in the light yet, and that'll be a tellowish I think. I'll add decals and more weathering as I go, each one should look similar, yet different. Lord Uglor
@ Lord_Caerolion - Thanks again! @ tangoalphatwo - Ah, tellowish...sausage fingers and a rush to hit the post button without proof reading have failed me again. I have been working on Titans for my other thread lately, so I haven't completed anything new in Necromunda, but I do have a preview of what I'm working on. My 'Zerker's name is Bane, having removed the goofy looking head it came with and converting a new one. An old Space Marine rebreather helmet, a mohawk from the Stimmer kit and a bit of greenstuff, and I have a much more pleasing head, at least to my eye. Hopefully I'll be able to finish him this week.
