War Angel
I plan on running the same vet squad as you described, but not in the backfield Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361986-how-much-infantry/page/2/#findComment-5480192 Share on other sites
Acturis
I want to like Veterans, but I regularly find them under performing versus my local meta. As I stated before, the lists I face are capable of deleting several squads of infantry in a single turn. If I give my veterans anything remotely scary like plasma guns or lascannons, I can expect them to be deleted first because they still have a 5+ save. A laughable stat these days as I'm usually facing weapons that have AP 2 to AP 5. If I don't make them scary because I want them to survive, I'm just buying expensive lasguns. Scions, on the other hand, cost more but I'm buying that BS 3+ (Tempestor getting a WS 3+), AP lasguns, deep strike, a better save, and only take up a troop slot. Slots I reserve for things like the 15 point astropath (Psychic Barrier), Priests, and bullgryns because I love watching marines cry about losing to Guard in melee. Maybe I'd field them more if they were troops like others have suggested. But that is pie in the sky hope, like hoping GW brings conscripts down a single point per model. (Seriously, the nerf bat hit the conscripts so hard that there is no reason to ever run them.) Bonzi
I like mechanized lists and I have used tripple melta vets hopping out of a Chimera to good effect. The truth is though that scions can do the same or better and can do it without a transport. The vet strat is a nice bonus and I won't spit on it because I use vets but for vets to be a viable choice they still need something or special rule beyond weapon choices to make them viable. sairence
I like mechanized lists and I have used tripple melta vets hopping out of a Chimera to good effect. The vet strat is a nice bonus and I won't spit on it because I use vets but for vets to be a viable choice they still need something or special rule beyond weapon choices to make them viable. Chimeras need their firing deck back, so that Veteran drive by shootings are possible again. It would give them a mechanised infantry niche back that no other Guard unit can fill, save for taking superheavies. librisrouge
Unless I'm playing an army that relies on some kind of gimmick, I look at a minimum of 90 infantry since I'll be running either 3 Battalions or a Brigade/Battalion. Mostly they screen for the heavy firepower, unless I play Cadian. If I'm Cadian, then it is re-rolling lascannons for days. tychobi
What about including veteran Squads? I am thinking of including three squads with triple grenade launchers and missile launcher as backfield objective campers; perhaps with Creed to give them all orders. The rest of the infantry would be 60-90 regular infantry. Vets are in a though place. Expensive for their impact and very fragile they entice you to spend points on weapons that can take advantage of their BS3. Its a trap. I love seeing vets from across the table. Easy kills on expensive models! For badass (for humans) infantry that bring the pain do Scions. They hide in parachutes 100% out of danger. For backfield camping tank commanders, mortar teams, wyvern, basilisk, might serve you better. wulfgar hammerfist
Too bad about veterans. Scions look like the better choice for what I want them to do. I'll most likely include a Scion battalion for precision strikes and a forward presence to score stuff like recon, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361986-how-much-infantry/page/2/#findComment-5480319 Share on other sites
Plague _Lord
Aren't cheapo vets with sniper rifles and a missile launcher kind of viable? Reroll 1s to wound from bring it down and - 1 ap strat (that helps both the snipers and the ML to do some work). If cadian then they are a pretty good objective camper unit that could help a vindicare take out a charachter in 1 turn. War Angel
Just keep them cheap and not obvious, and if they do get targeted first, something else with a more deadly gun gets to live. Mordian Glory
270..... This! How’s your all infantry list doing with psychic awakening? On paper it is looking very good! I will be trying it out in battle next week so will let you now how that goes :) librisrouge 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/361986-how-much-infantry/page/2/#findComment-5483456 Share on other sites
Lord Blackwood
I commonly run my guard with my knights. My standard 2000 point TAC list run a lot of armor to do the heavy lifting 4 Leman Russ Tanks 3 Knight Lancers Because of this I run the minimum infantry 30 + a Company Commander for command point gen. I think Infantry is largely dependent on what your doing , who you are playing and what your meta is.
