Swarbie’s Project Log: House Interitus & more...

Hi everyone! This thread will be primarily for my Chaos Knight Household, House Interitus (although I’m sure some other Nurgley friends will sneak in too). I’ve got a couple members of the household still WIP and 4 completed. We’ll start with the complete ones.

First up, my very first Knight Despoiler, Röttnest (pilot unknown). I started him back in June of 2018 and he took about a year to complete. He’s fully magnetised, but his other options still aren’t painted xD

VtBzOjs.jpg

When the new Chaos Knight kit got announced I got very excited and scooped one up to make a Knight Desecrator. This is Tötes Auger, piloted by Alain Malinar. I had a blast building the laser destructor into a Knight-sized hunting rifle.

cj9SkIB.jpg

With a Desecrator I obviously needed some Wardogs too, so got to work on this pair.

First up is Blött Hund, piloted by Stefan Malinar. This guy is magnetised but I haven’t made the other weapon loadout yet.

6tJLbVr.jpg

And this is Gräu Fliege, piloted by Daen Malinar

OEPPAsk.jpg

So that’s all the completed Knights. I have two more in-progress.

The first of these is my Knight-Castigator, Flüss Teufel. Piloted by Johann Malinar, this Knight specialises in wetland-ambushes and so will be draped in plants and pond scum once I’m done.

dgX2QQX.jpg

Johann is built from a GSC Clamavus, with lots of trimming to let him fit in the cockpit.

vCEk8hw.jpg

The cockpit will be filled with water once I get resin to do the base properly. I’ll be modelling a big splash as the Knight leaps out of the water to surprise its prey.

Xc62wRd.jpg

And the final Knight I’m working on is a Rampager. This one is going to be my most weird/corrupted Knight, I think. The story is the pilot was slain and the household laid his coffin on the hull, but he returned to life after 7 days and 7 nights and possessed the chassis.

I give you Tödesuhr, “piloted” by Harkonnen Vost

I hope you all enjoy! I’ve been really inspired by everyone on these forums, especially folks like Krautscientist and Duskraider. I’d like to do at least a couple more Knights this year/expand on the Dark Mechanicum aligned with House Interitus.

EDIT: rather than creating new threads I’m gonna fold all my hobby stuff into this one, title changed accordingly

Thanks! I like my “living” Nurgle models to be relatively bright, and the mechanical stuff to be much more drab and dead-looking. I’m glad it’s coming across well with the Knights!

I’m continuing to flesh out the Rampager. Most significant addition is the secondary weapon arms, built with Sentinel legs, the Sentinel Chainsaw and a Mourngul hand.

I’ve also figured out the orientation for the chainsword/daemon arm. Gonna be doing cables to fill the sockets on the Daemon-part, what are people’s’ thoughts on the Greenstuff World tentacle and cable maker? I’ve been thinking of picking one up.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

@Kolgrim: I’m having a lot of fun with the base! Having an IG sergeant ground up under one foot was fun to do, but my favourite detail is the cowering man from the old metal Giant kit in the cut-up shrine xD

@Doghouse: that’s high praise with the quality of Knights I’ve seen on here! Thank you.

@Jukkiz: yeah I was going through my bits for pieces to make up the face and it caught my eye! The cabling and little fan make it a pretty perfect fit, and I really like how it looks.

@Sagentus: definitely consider it! I got my Despoiler back in June of 2018 and once I started finishing it (nearly a year later xD) I got hooked. The Knight kits are like big fun toys; they’re just a joy to put together and play around with. They come fully recommended by me!

Minor update: the Castigator’s shoulders are now attached and fully painted!

Bz1YjUi.jpg

Put a couple transfers on the upper plates for some added interest; I like the rust covering them over and giving more texture.

BgrDlwY.jpg

Some kill markings from the IG transfers. I imagine these as celebrating very significant victories. I’ll clean up the rust that made it onto the creeper at some point xD

So rather than keeping it Chaos Knights focusses, I’ve decided to post all my hobby progress here. Thread title changed accordingly.

At the moment work is continuing on both the Castigator and Rampager. I’ve also ordered a cable roller from Greenstuff World, so once that arrives I can get to doing the final detailing on the Rampager then paint it!

I’m also planning to dip my toes (read: plunge headfirst) into Necromunda. I’ll hopefully be grabbing the Underhive box in a couple weeks, and I’m gonna get my hands on Gunnery Sergeant Harker for a Heavy Bolter on a Goliath leader + a body for a Juve.

In the meantime, I painted up a Harlequin Shadowseer for my partner’s birthday. I got her a box of Players last year as she likes Kill Team, but we just haven’t had the time to hear further than building and priming a couple of them. I figured a nice character would hopefully motivate the two of us to actually knuckle down and build that kill team.

I haven’t really painted a lot of fine detail before, and the ornamentation on this one involved a lot of cursing and crossed eyes xD still, I’m happy with it and she loved it! Probably good practice for painting up a gang of Eschers in future...

Thanks Sarge! I’m really glad you like it!

Now, the Castigator is finally fully assembled! There’s still a gap to cover up on the ammo feed and I’d like to add more vegetation on the hull and entwined around various parts of the chassis, but we’re at a good point now to take a break from it and collect our thoughts before moving forward. The base is gonna require some difficult resin work to get a good splash effect going, so I’m gonna take my time practicing and learning before attempting it.

I give you: Flüss Teufel, the Water Devil! Piloted by Johann Malinar, this beast specialises in infiltrating war zones before the battle lines are drawn. It lies hidden in pools of stagnant water, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When it does attack, it’s speed and vindictive fury demonstrate how it earned the title of Devil.

A size comparison shot shows just how dang huge Cerastus-class Knights are! I’d like to eventually get one of every kind but for now I’ll set my sights on an Atropos sometime in the relatively near future.

AMgiX3B.jpg

I also did a little work on the pose of the Rampager; mostly involved repositioning the toes on the left foot to let him actually grip the rubble, and changing the angle of the Chainsword arm so it hangs a little heavier. I’ve also got the shoulder pads assembled but I’m not 100% sold on them yet. I may remove them in favour of masses of cables and engines but that remains to be seen.

z8R7yIF.jpg

My Green Stuff World roll maker arrived today so I’ll be experimenting with making cables and such-like for the Rampager! Also gonna be knuckling down on Necromunda stuff staring this weekend; got conversions for an Escher Leader and a Goliath Leader ready to go once I pick up Underhive!

So. With my Roll Maker acquired I started messing around with it and within ten seconds started kicking myself for not getting one sooner xD this thing is awesome, and I’m having a lot of fun experimenting with it!

LBGMY1E.jpg

The Stagnasis Engine is now plugged into the Knight, and I’ll be adding a bit more cabling before I start neatening everything up.

VRwgM2I.jpg

The corrupted arm is getting hooked up to the main chassis too; the spare ports will be used to cable it into the Chainsword itself

And then, I got into Necromunda. I’ve played a couple of practice games and absolutely loved it! So here’s the start of my Goliath gang

fsPG0b2.jpg

9s1yO2w.jpg

This is my Forge Tyrant, Barret. Many generations ago he was exiled from House Goliath and was forced to wander the Ash Wastes, desperately trying to survive. Now, with everyone who remembered his name long dead, Barret has returned to take back what is rightfully his. The heavy bolter is from Sergeant Harker and is pinned into place. He made a decent showing in his first game, gunning down an Escher champion before immediately running out of ammunition xD

0h14UVc.jpg

Meet Buster, a Goliath Juve. Sergeant Harker’s body seems perfect for a slightly less juiced-up Goliath, so here he is as a cheap Juve with a stub gun and a knife.

jYOaemJ.jpg

This is Binks, my Forge Boss. He’s got a cleaver and combat shotgun, and has so far done nothing but open and close doors xD

xtELITK.jpg

OCHNIHG.jpg

Here’s Benny! The Stimmer models are incredibly awesome, but with the sheer number of attacks they get on the charge the paired axes are ridiculous overkill (they’re expensive too). So I bashed together a Paired Spud Jacker option for him, and he rewarded my efforts by brutally clubbing an Escher specialist to death before being obliterated by a high power plasma pistol shot xD

p6DID7O.jpg

Brock, a Ganger with stub gun and axe

CpHjWSc.jpg

Buddy, a Ganger with Stub Cannon

FhZdLIQ.jpg

Bazz, another Ganger with Stub Cannon

Then as a final treat, my partner really loves how Escher look so I’m building up a gang for her. I wanted her leader to be something special, so, with her choosing the weapons (stiletto sword and plasma pistol) I put together this as-yet unnamed lady

u08k3TH.jpg

I imagine her as wearing the fancy clothes she puts on when she goes up-hive to make drug deals and attend fancy parties. The GSC Magus is an awesome kit!

Thanks for sharing those knight conversions, the cabling looks great, particularly for a first try. The castigator looks awesome, I'm impressed about the pose, any tips? I'm working on a Acheson and wouldnt have thought it could stand with all the weight on one foot.

I used a two-part epoxy for all the ‘important’ joints on the Castigator, including the toes. Basically any part of it that is load-bearing is stuck together with a 100 kg+ graded adhesive xD the toe on the rear foot also has a little pin just to keep it steady while I stuck it in place. A generous amount of epoxy on the front foot ensured the overall model was secure while the rear foot dried and now the model is pretty much rock-solid. I did cut a few corners building the embankment it’s running up, so the only instability comes from the being a little loose at points

A mini-Necromunda update: I’ve hashed out the colour scheme for my Goliaths!

Meet Binks, a Goliath Forge Boss who now proudly wears the colours of the Broiler Boys

I am really really happy with this guy! I decided to push myself further than I normally would and as a result I’m pretty sure he’s the best infantry-sized model I’ve ever painted! He took a few hours, but now I know what I’m doing the other Gangers will probably go by much more quickly.

I’m also aiming to get a variety of skin tones across the gang, so if anyone has any good recipes for darker skin tones please let me know! It’s something I haven’t really done before.

Looks snazzy and I'm really digging the skintone!

Interesting, and subtle use, of the trans pride flag on that armour plate.

Thanks! I was worried I was going too pale partway through but it contrasts well with the dark armour.

As for the pride flag, I figure Goliaths would absolutely be pro-trans. They’re basically all gunning to become their ideal, muscle-bound selves, so what’s a little extra testosterone when your blood is already 80% HGH?

Well, thanks to Covid-19 I’m now in essentially a 5 week holiday! Time to knuckle down and get stuff done. I’ve been doing lots of little bits and bobs but the most significant thing I’m working on is building a Goliath Zerker! He’s built primarily from the Stimmer model, with an arm from a Verminlord Corrupted, some toothpicks and lots of blutack and greenstuff

I’ve never sculpted muscle before so this will be interesting! Fortunately, I can cover over any rough areas with cabling and Stimm injectors

These knights are incredible. Highly inspirational stuff. I love the big conversion elements, of course, but the attention to small details - like the rusty bayonet blades on those autocannons - really make them feel like Chaos models.

Can you tell us about the painting process for that Castigator? The swampy greens and rust tones look very nice.

Can you tell us about the painting process for that Castigator? The swampy greens and rust tones look very nice.

Sure! The green is a base of 2:1 Waaaagh Flesh and Militarum Green. I like mixing Contrast paints into my basecoats as they help thin them down without making the colour thin and washy; I don’t even have to apply two thin coats sometimes! I then layer it up with some straight Waaagh Flesh and wash it with Agrax Earthshade and the green is done.

The rust is a fun and simple process. Pick an area where you want rust to be forming over the paint/metal. Take a bit of sponge (the kind used in blister packs) and dab it in Dryad Bark. Dab most of the paint off and then start stippling and dabbing it onto any areas you want to be rusty. Let that dry. Then take a bit of sponge and work some Ryza Rust into it. Dab the Ryza Rust onto the areas you previously hit with Dryad Bark, trying to stay within those areas. The orange rust should be surrounded by darker brown rust.

At this point I usually wash the panel with Agrax Earthshade as part of getting the base colour correct. After the wash dries, check your rust. If it’s too dull, add some more Ryza Rust with a sponge.

If you do it right, there should be a couple layers of physical texture from the unthinned paints forming the rust. It shows up a little better in closeup photographs, but I like the effect; it makes it feel like the rust has been building up over a long time.

I hope this helps! Thank you for your kind comments on my work; I put most of my effort into those smaller details so it’s very nice to have them be appreciated!

Well it’s been a couple weeks but I have actually been cranking out some hobby stuff. It turns out being forced to stay at home means I can clean the house, play video games and still get plenty of hobby done! It’s been quite nice, and I’ve still got a week off!

So let’s get started on what I’ve been up to. First up, Knights!

I started painting up Tödesuhr’s head as a test for the overall scheme and I’m pretty happy with it. Going with black armour speckled with rust.

yiS2EZL.jpg

80ODS12.jpg

RUWE5i2.jpg

The armour plate I painted is more or less completely hidden from view when the Knight is assembled, so it’s a perfect practice piece.

I also primed and began painting the main body.

b7JJrj4.jpg

wzLUPes.jpg

The. I managed to pick up the DG half of Know No Fear. I’ve already built and painted all these models, so it’s time to get kitbashing!

I built a Poxwalker command squad to add some interest to my zombie horde. Plenty of sculpting to be done to smooth them over but I’m happy with them

t1SfHOi.jpg

gS5lnfU.jpg

naszrya.jpg

W6zuNa6.jpg

6uK890G.jpg

I also started building a close assault Plague Marine Squad. The idea here is to have a squad of 5 zooming up in a Rhino, probably with one or two characters joining them. We have a Champion with Powerfist and plasma gun, two melta gunners and two with great cleavers (only one built so far).

GPio2U9.jpg

YMKbuUX.jpg

ZrNlp4Q.jpg

I’ve also been doing a lot of Necromunda stuff, including planning to build my own Zone Mortalis walls! But for now, I’ll simply show off my second painted Ganger, Buddy.

lRV5lGj.jpg

Iry2wbc.jpg

I really enjoy working on Necromunda models, in learning something new with each one! Working on Buddy taught me how to paint stubble, so I’ll be using that here and there from now on.
