Grotsmasha
The first video was interesting, but a subscription will depend on (for me) whether he produces enough content in a month for me to feel the price is justified. Only a video or two a month probably won’t make the cut for me, but hopefully he produces enough that others feel is of value to make it worth it for them - I’d prefer to see him succeed rather than the venture fail. Seeming it's full time career for him now, I'd expect at least 2, potentially 3 videos a week for the subscription, with one of those making it to Youtube. Marshal Rohr
I was just thinking today, I bet another source of income will be in person painting classes at major events. Urauloth
Interesting to see him work outside the fairly narrow format of WHTV videos. Pretty interested in the historical content etc as well. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. armarnis
i have to sadly say i am not overly impressed with the two tutorials so far. i expected a bit more unconventional compared to the 08/15 "standard" but i guess that he will stick to the clean standard Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/362266-duncan-rhodes-painting-academy/page/4/#findComment-5489543 Share on other sites

Arkhanist
I'm still in shock from seeing him reach for the Army Painter matt white instead of that chalky goop ceramite white. Which I personally rather like. That what was enjoyable about his longer Vids on Warhammer TV, it allways felt like "Dang, I actually think I can do that". Subtleknife
Now that he has the freedom I would like if he would expand on why he chose that particular brand for that particular paint. I.e why did he chose army painter white over citadel white etc. Oshikai and Magos Takatus 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/362266-duncan-rhodes-painting-academy/page/4/#findComment-5489768 Share on other sites

I.e why did he chose army painter white over citadel white etc. I agree. Knowing which paints are better for which tasks is tremendously useful. I use Scale75 white and black from the Colours of Doom box set because I feel they flow better than the GW equivalents, though I did really enjoy using Corvus Black when I got it from Forge World (tremendously happy that's part of the main range now). Marshal Rohr
He just doesn’t come even close to Darren. Almost like the channels are meant to do two different things. Weird he doesn’t paint like Lil Legends and Angel Giraldez. Pretty wild you can’t just appreciate he’s trying to improve the hobby and have to tear him down. Oshikai
He just doesn’t come even close to Darren. Different Target Audience, something he is completly transparent about Now that he has the freedom I would like if he would expand on why he chose that particular brand for that particular paint. I.e why did he chose army painter white over citadel white etc. A small little tid-bit on why a brand was chosen would be cool Agreed, and maybe even name different manufacturer colors which can be used in lue of each other. Wishlisting here of course, but something like that could be nice. Marshal Rohr
I went out and got the army painter regiment brush after his Sisters tutorial and I find it to be more useful than the GW medium layer brush for panel work (which I’ve switched to solely using for blocking in small details). Oshikai
I think they are doing good. But at this Stage I don`t think I will subscribe, simply not getting much out of his (great) Vids I haven`t somehow allready figured out. Not that I am an amazing Painter, but I am content with where I am at. But I think there is a Place for them and reckon they will have all the success they deserve. FormelyKnownAsSmashyPants
As good (actually great from a technical point of view) as Darren's stuff is, I've saved a few vids, the one on doing text is particularly good, I imagine I'll get far more mileage from Dun Can Do's Two Thin Coats Academy, as it looks like in more in that target demographic. StraightSilver
I would say that I wouldn't necessarily fit Duncan's demographic but I still love watching his videos and every now and again will learn something new which makes the whole process worthwhile. But I also just love watching his videos. There are so many times I am channel hopping on TV and need something to watch for 20-30 minutes and this fits the bill and the quality of the videos means I can get some hobby stuff on the telly that my housemates don't mind watching. There are multiple painting channels and they are all aimed at different audiences but that doesn't mean they aren't necessarily worth watching.I must admit though that whilst watching his Stormtrooper video I couldn't help laughing at one of the names of the Army Painter paints he was using..."Wizard's Cloak".... I was expecting him to highlight it with "Wizard's Sleeve"......I'm such a child...... Axineton
Yeah I subbed this morning. Apparently the site went down for a bit with so much traffic according to one of Duncan’s tweets. Site looks great and really hope he does some Judge Dredd miniatures but that’s not appropriate for this board so I’ll shut up now.
