Having played now a couple games. I’ll be honest. I am actually somewhat impressed by paired combatant rules. It means marshall does not need to babysit as much. It is not a great rule but considering have less attacks due to specials, Neo’s actually use it quite effectively

In my games the lack of support for the heavier weapons is the main disappointment. Most times the powerfists do more damage then any chainsword. So for my playstyle and armylists this rule just make my army cost more then it will be a support in any game.

Doing dbl fist or fist only on sgt?

Does this special rule only work when the neos have combat weapons and not Bolters? Seems that way by how it's worded.

Everyone is considered to have a melee weapon if they don't have a specific one on their profile. So yes it works regardless of how the neo's are armed

I play 5 msu crusaders. It is a shame they cost 5 points more than same assault squad, or 5 more points than regular tactical squad. I bet it is because of this rule they got no benefit of.

Honestly I feel like it is and really the cost should be shifted over to the neophytes instead of the initiates, would make the whole thing way more fair

I'd like to see both Neophytes and Crusaders cost 12 points, and for the rule to be changed to +1 to hit in melee for all models when there are as least as many Initiates and Sword Brothers as Neophytes. The Big squads already run with characters for anti leadership and other buffs.+1 would work out better if we consider it'd stack with those rerolls.

Even with this extra rule we shouldn't be paying what we are; Scouts have Infiltrate for 11 PPM, our Neophytes now have Paired Combattants for 11 PPM. Even if we assume that these are worth 1 PPM each (and I'd argue that Infiltrate is much better) that still leaves our Neophytes at 13 PPM to a Tactical Marine's 12 PPM with literally the same statline and special rules, with only weapon options differing.
