Hi fellow Heresy enthusiasts

I've just managed to secure myself two Betrayal at Calth box sets (Minus 1 dread and 10 marines) and I'm keen to finally join you all in this fantastic system.

Following the Centurion rules for games, seems most games of 30k are played using those in Australia : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WZrgXOaA374H-qxKPEJxMmjFiA2bp7kg/view?fbclid=IwAR3-o_6F6PkEiBSnwqKftkj2FC9AX0PwjHmPPwStLY6GmSb1D0Q_FIb3SqY

Now I haven't read much of the rules yet and am really going with a rule of cool approach but any pointers on my starting army list?

I would swap out the boarding shield on the praetor for an iron halo

I assume the apothecary goes with the big squad with the praetor. Making it a mini Death Star in the smaller games.

The heavy support is similar to my own stuff I like it

I agree with swapping shield for iron halo - it ain't cheap but necessary if your Praetor wants to survive melee.

You should definitely add a couple of heavier weapons to Terminator squad. A pair of chainfists let your squad handle both infantry and dreadnoughts or land raiders and can also prove deadly to enemy warlord thanks to S8 instant death.

You may consider giving your sarge with warblade a melta bomb - it's cheap and can be your only way to kill a dreadnought.

One thing to keep in mind is that unless you can roll some nice warlord trait your Praetor doesn't support your guys in any way (other than being a beatstick). In smaller games, when you don't want to take any Rites,  you may consider bringing a consul instead. They are weaker fighters but are also cheaper and they can support your squads.

I'm not saying that you should drop the Praetor -no, he is really a fine choice and will be hard to kill with so many bodyguards and FnP. Just know that he is quite an investment in smaller games so make sure he actually kills some enemies.

In my opinion the list looks pretty good.

I am assuming you have the shield on the praetor as you bought the FW model? if you're planning on using a paragon blade and you want to buy a shield to make him WYSIWYG then you might as well go for a breaching shield, you won't be missing out on the extra attack as the paragon blade is a specialist weapon. I would drop the archaeotech pistol and take digital lasers and melta bombs.

As mentioned above, a couple of chainfists on the terminators is a good idea.

I probably wouldn't bother with armoured ceramite on the deredeo as you want to keep it a long way from your enemies.

Calivers are OK on the support squad, but they will be limiting to standing and firing, so it might be worth considering chargers instead. The range is much shorter but they can move up and support your melee units better, which might give your army some additional synergy.  By and large, plasma pistols are over-costed, i wouldn't recommend taking them on your sergeants.

I hope that is useful!

Going to break it down for you as it will be the easiest way for me to explain, but in addition to what others have said:

HQ:

If you are dead set on a praetor over a delegatus centurion (a cheap and budget preator for lower points lists) then give him (assuming you are using the FW model) a Terranic Greatsword, an Iron Halo, and either a combi weapon (I prefer combi volkites as they are not one use alongside grenade launchers unlike combi plasma, flamer and melta) and stick him with the terminator squad. As Varyn said, give him a melta bomb too.

Elites:

Apothecaries are nice but if you are sticking him with the terminator squad then I wouldn't bother with him, your terminators are already 2+ 4++ so will tank damage anyway (and with the iron halo your praetor will have the same saves as well).

Speaking of which, terminators. As Lautrec said, chainfists. On a five man squad I'd give them one chainfist, two power fists and the last guy a power axe and give the sergeant a free calibanite warblade. Which is a power sword but better. The flamer isn't really helpful as cataphractii clad don't get overwatch and you'd get better use out of 5 re-roll to hit.

Troops:

I feel that the power fist is out of place on a tactical squad as you really don't want them to be in CC with something that needs a power fist to damage it, its nice for that instant death but you don't want to rely on it. Instead consider taking three ten-man squads, all with the close combat weapons and the vexillas with the calibanite warblade on the sergeants, that way you have four scoring troops instead of three (in a game where scoring is key) which your opponent is going to have to deal with alongside your heavy support and elites/hq.

Volkite Calivers, hit on 3s wound on 2s failed wounds deal another wound. At 30" keep these guys back to 'guard' your heavies. Good solid unit. Just get rid of the plasma pistol on the sergeant, its not really needed.

Heavy support:

As Varyn mentioned, get rid of armoured ceramite on the deredeo. Its 20 points you don't want to spend and if someone gets close to your backline with a melta weapon you have more serious problems. Otherwise, good loadout.

Heavy support squad, missiles are decent for low point games and the krak missiles will delete power armour while the frag will force saves that even terminators would fail. Give the sergeant an Augury scanner (at 5 points its cheap and good) so nothing can infiltrate 18" near them and if any troops teleport of drop in the squad can fire at them as if it were their turn. So if a nasy assault squad drops near your back line you can either five 5 kraks and kill five as long as they don't have an apothecary or fire 5 frag missiles at them and force those saves, which would soften them up for the volkite support who will mulch whats left.
