So has anyone had any luck with him?

Do you use his buffing powers and poxwalker horde or do you deepstrike him next to something tough and let him have a go with his D3 manreaper?

I want to know about your experience with the Traveller.

Cheers,

PL

At the moment I'm always running Typhus as my Warlord and in every list I play with. I know his warlord trait is pretty awful and I pretty much always forget it but I really enjoy running him. I use him to buff the poxwalkers with Vitality and usually give a melee unit or the poxwalkers Blades of Putrifcation. He roves up the board as a deepstrike/charge deterent and is really great at tying things like dreads and vehicles up that attempt to charge backline units. I have a friend who plays with 2 lots of eliminators and I find that the snipers really don't do much and he can move around unmolested.

I played a game with him on Saturday where he held up a unit for 30 Ork boys for 2 full truns after they had Greentide'ed in my backlines, he lost 4 wounds over 4 combat phases and with the help of Deathshroud terminators and morale, managed to wipe them.

I know compared to other choices, like Demon princes, he's not optimal but I find he pulls his weight nearly every game and makes his points back. Being able to do a couple of MW a turn on top of 2 powers, 1 deny, being a beatstick and very tough, he does the work.

I would love for him to be able to get something else for his WLT from PA but I'm not hopeful

If you play at a friendly shop, he's great!  Great fun, great zombie horde synergy, good offensive power when he gets in!

If you expect him to make a difference in anything running current decently competitive stuff, you're going to feel the pain. Not saying he's worthless, but like Trawling mentioned, falls short of a demon prince. His slowness and the early 8th hardiness DG rules are (that is becoming more and more negligible by the day) are an unfortunate pairing on a character so expensive, and who is best used as a linchpin for certain tactics.

For example, even with his invuln and FNP, two squad of eliminators can somewhat reliably punk him in one round of shooting if he gets left in LoS somewhere due to:

  1. not paying attention
  2. a covering vehicle being removed,
  3. or even something like  Iron Hands eliminators who go second in turn 1 (Or Ultramarines ones in tac doctrine) that get no -1 with HVY weapons so can easily reposition to get that bit of his big gorgeous model in sight for them to pew pew.

There's always the potential for him to shrug it off with the invuln and 5+++, but there's also the potential for a 160+pt character to just pop like a big nurgly pimple from some average rolls. Not poor rolls, average ones.

That said, I still love the big bastard and running him with Necrosius to make two 20 man pox blobs a fun waddling horde of doom.

I allways loved Typhus and still use the old model as a plaguecaster (too awesome not to) however I dunno... He just is so slow. Sure buffing the poxwalkers is nice but even having 40 around him - have they ever reached tge enemy deployment zone? :tongue.:

My usual strat is to have one block of 20 have about, 3 of those 20 guys forward of the blob/character ball.

Put putrescent vitality on the frontmost 20. So with Typhus around, they're T5 now, then if I don't have other stuff in danger somewhere on the board that would be a better target for it (blighthaulers, blightlords, etc...), Miasma too, so -1 to hit.  Then, use "cloud of flies" on the back 20.  Helps make sure that the ultra-hardy block of 20 is the one taking all the shots, getting you extra mileage out of the 40 of them.

It's very fun in casual games, makes for a relatively threatening zombie horde!  If you've got the points, putting a blightbringer so they get 2D6 pick highest advance is pretty neat, especially for Typhus' slow ass.  More often than not, I have the tallyman because he's so cheap, and full re-rolls on their melee attacks goes a looooooong way once they're stuck in with something.

My last game against BA with this, a meaty jumpack DC charge killed only 12 of the 16 remaining in the front blob, but a "the dead walk again" meant that the other blob of 20 in back with blades of putrefaction brought back 9 of those 12 dead by just overwhelming the BA with saves.

Very fluffy and fun!

Caveat, again. Anybody with decent anti-synergy setups (ala snipers, especially eliminators) will dismantle said fun combo with little effort. :p
