Points are only relevant for the matches themselves not being one-sided affairs and if upgrades were free, that could lead down the snowball slope where those who have stuff keep on getting more stuff. If the campaign is run with sportsmanship and wackier mission setups or rpg elements from the start, maybe then you could just keep on adding stuff without sweating the details.
