As often as you would like - taking a Successor key word is a choice, per the rules as written, and isn't influenced per the rules by color scheme.

YMMV based on house rules your gaming group may have.

If I was to paint a DA force in their Heresy era color cheme, how often would I have to play them as successors 'cause they're not green and white?

Never. Because Dark Angels don't have actual rules for successors, despite what the codex says. :laugh.:

Plus, take it from someone who paints their Dark Angels in Heresy colours:

Primaris just look good in Proper Dark Angels colours

It does depend on who you ask I suppose. Lore-wise, I don't think that would ever happen that a chapter would do such a thing, it'd be a successor. However, in general for the actual game, most people would be okay either way, as long as it is clear they're using DA rules or not as that would effect the use of named characters.

I game with some extremely competitive tournament players, not one would ever bat an eyelid at a change in paint scheme.

Other WYSIWYG is another matter of course.

This and as long as they're matching according to any color rules the tournie has. Casual you don't even to base coat them :P
