General Strike
Hey guys, I'm thinking about doing a chaos cult army, with fewer marines, and mostly cultists and daemonkin. How would you guys recommend building this? Should I use CSM or another army? The servants of the abyss are cool, but very limited in their army list. Zephaniah Adriyen
Use the Forge World Heretic Militarum rules, they're fluff-wise the same as Servants of the Abyss, but with more options. They do lose stuff if you don't go monofaction, however. Hannibal
Hey guys, I'm thinking about doing a chaos cult army, with fewer marines, and mostly cultists and daemonkin. How would you guys recommend building this? Should I use CSM or another army? The servants of the abyss are cool, but very limited in their army list. Like has been said, have a look at the FW Books. They offer lots of different wargear that otherwise is unavailable to you. More ideas: A) Abbadon makes a whole bunch of your army fearless. Maybe that´s a good start. In addition, he offers good melee cababilities. B) You could run a daemons and heretics theme that was supported by GW years back. Basically it was all kind of mutated chaos cultists with access to some vehicles. You can do this by including cultists (maybe heavily converted**), Chaos Spawns and Defilers as well as some supporting characters. That´ll give you an army that is playable with the current codex and fits the background of your 40k universe. You can even include some Fallen here, because in the fluff the Fallen often fight alongside Heretics. This would give you a reason to include some of the more potent characters (just name them to be Fallen themewise, not rulewise) as well as Cypher. Though Cypher never fought alongside Daemons! Don´t know wether that includes the daemonic vehicles like Defilers. C) You can run an Astra Militarum Force and call it a Chaos Heretics Force. Done. :) D) You can run an army based on the daemonic vehicles like Defilers and Venomcrawlers with some supporting characters and a bunch of screening cultists. Tallarn Commander
I often do what Zephaniah recommended. I like to run Renegades and Heretics alongside CSM lists that have lots of Daemon Engines (and that use the wonderful Soulforged Detachment rules from the Vigilus book). The fluff is that the Night Lords have hired my Renegades and Heretics as mercenaries. It's great for casual games but it gets stomped at tournaments. Here is a link my Chaos blog where I took such a list to a tournament. You can also scroll up or down to see how this list did in pickup games. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/321042-tallarn-commanders-chaos-valkia-and-annika-completed/?p=5370796 Daemon Engines and hordes are great fun. I'm branching out into Possessed so I'll try them out alongside my Daemon Engines and R&H later this year.
