How many would you take in a unit.

Thinking of converting some blightkings and was considering how many you guys fielded.

I know they aren't massively effective but I don't have any and I'm not a tournament player anyway.

(that said I wouldn't want them shot off the table turn one any I would like a win every now and again

Unfortunately they don't really get anything for being DG, lacking as they do any Rapid Fire or Assault weapons, and also not benefiting from other rules like Digustingly Resilient. Lack of Plague weapons means they don't benefit from Arch Contaminator. Lack of Blight Grenades means they can't use Blight Bombardment. They're kind of ok for the points after CA2019, but they still cost similar to a plague marine, who can deal damage from Turn 1 in most cases, has Objective Secured, may not have as many wounds, but is still pretty durable in his own right, and synergises with the rest of the army to a much greater extent.

Possessed require way too much support on the table to make them competitive. As things are, I would only recommend them for fun/if you like the models or for narrative reasons.

How about if fielded as a plain renegade nurgle force. They could advance and charge then.

Daemon prince/ master of possession/ sorceror on palequin

2 squads of possessed

Greater possessed

Would make for a thematic Daemonkin vanguard detatchment to supliment my death guard/ Nurgle daemons

Probably not massively effective but could be fun

They’re pretty cheap now so units of 10 in Rhinos or blobs is 15-20 can do well. As already mentioned they play better as Nurgle Alpha Legion with Master of Possession and Dark Apostle support. AL strats work well. Oblits can work well in the same list too for funsies.

Just don’t play Grey Knights. You’ll lose, bad.

That does sound fun and fluffy. If you're running them alongside Nurgle Daemons then you could, if I understand the keyword requirements correctly, run them as part of a Chaos Daemons Nurgle detachment, since they have those keywords. They won't lose much, relative to being Death Guard, just you may find that you don't have any worthwhile strats that can target them, but they can get all sorts of buffs that target Daemons.

EDIT: Nope, wait, just double checked, they moved Daemon from Faction to Keywords in an Errata, nevermind. You'll still need a DG detachment to get a them on the table, battleforged.

If you include a Nurgle Daemon detachment with a Poxbringer and keep him within 6" of your Possessed, you get +1S and wound rolls of 6+ do +1D. Have the poxbringer cast Virtulant Blessing you get +1 to wound rolls and on 7+ you do double damage. Also have a DP near by to cast Blade of Putrification (plus re-rolling 1's to hit) for an additional +1 to wound. You could even use VotLW for another +1 to wound (which you can't use on a renegade legion).

The CP investment isn't that bad, 1 maybe 2 turns of Cloud of Flies so they don't get shot before combat and protects them from overwatch and 1 or 2 for VotLW. We are really talking just 2 or 3 per game of the 5 you get for the Daemon detachment for a serious threat.

If you roll average, you get 30 attacks hitting on 3+ re-rolling 1's. Wounding anything on 2+, 2 damage on 3+ & 3 damage on 4+. At -2AP most things at best are getting a 5+ save.

The AL Possessed use a DiscoLord, 2 DP, a Greater Possessed, a Dark Apostle, and just as many CP.

I'm not saying DG/Nurgle Possessed are better, but they have potential. Just something to think about.

Greater Possessed cost 60 points (10 less then a Poxbringer) and only gives the +1S, the Poxbringer adds potential extra damage and a spell/deny. I admit it would be nice to go mono faction, but I think we would also need a Dark Apostle to make up for what the Poxbringer brings. If they also updated one of our other characters (like the Tallyman) to cast a prayers, then I could see dropping the Daemon detachment.
