Warhead01
Hello! So over a year ago I started a diy chapter and have used that army all of once, almost a year ago. I kinda dropped out of the hobby for most of last year and am starting up again with a few projects. I was thinking about selling my Primaris army but haven't even looked at the new codex Space Marines yet. This leaves me with the question, what do I need to play space Marines currently? If I wanted to play Black Templars, Blood Angels or dark Angels for example, which books do I now need? Not sure what I m going to do but I don't really want to paint my diy chapter anymore and being a little out of the loop doesn't help me decide what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Brother Cambrius
First off, welcome back to the hobby! :D In terms of stuff you would need, naturally first off ensure you have the most up to date Codex of the Adeptus Astartes. ;) If you want to collect and field particular chapters and/or their descendants, a number now have their own Codex Supplements with new rules, models and delightful toys to play with. Check the GW website out to see which ones entice you if you're still a touch all at sea on choosing who to go for. Alternatively, if you want to stick to your DIY Chapter, you can always utilise whichever supplement befitting the Canon chapter you like, just have them be successors of that particular Chapter, like I do for my Imperial Fist/Crimson Fists successors. :) Cambrius Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/363023-still-have-my-space-marines-thinking-about-repainting-them/#findComment-5501644 Share on other sites
Closet Skeleton
All you 'need' to play marines is the latest marine codex. There's supplement hell going on with marines but its totally possible to be semi-competative with just the marine book. I could take a barely updated 5th ed list to a casual setting and have actually balanced games. Before the meta had time to adapt to the new codex and the supplements weren't out I placed best Astartes at a 80 person event with a mostly starter box based Primaris army and could win 4/5 games (but place in the middle due to not having many high ITC mission wins) just when the really broken stuff became flavour of the month. Blood Angels need Codex Blood Angels + Blood of Baal. Dark Angels need their codex + Ritual of the Damned. Black Templars need the main book and are helped out by Faith and Fury. The only really game changing chapter supplements are Raven Guard (just for the infiltration stuff) and Iron Hands. White Scars are boring without their supplement but Imperial Fists, Salamanders and Ultramarines don't really need them. Dracos
Things to re-start 1) Chaos Black Spray Cans 2) New Astartes Codex 2.0 3) Play test: Black Templars, Iron Hands, Raven Guard 4) Purchase Raven Guard transfers When in doubt, alwatys Raven Guard ;) Semi-joking out of the way. If at all possible playtest what you have with a friendly player. Take the boys out for a drive and using BattleScribe you can get a good feel for each Chapter your interested in. I believe unless your a special snowflake (that would be me) DIY are tough to stay dedicated to (unless your "that guy" pretending his Chapter is the new hotness) because no matter what we do our head-canon will never be actual-canon. I believe there are three important legs to choosing a Chapter 1) Playstyle 2) Color scheme 3) Narrative Your priority might vary. Might vary as time rolls by but if you're at least mostly happy with each of those three things then you'll have a sustainable hobby army. I personally lag on the narrative but am going to work on that this summer.
