Had a go with the new Valejjo metallics, which I have to say are some of the best I have ever used - here is a Crusade-era War Hound

Very nice! I’d better see if they do a dark red. I bought Scale 75 Garnet Alchemy and it was nothing like the picture. My Word Bearer plasma squad is completely bodged and I’m going to have to strip or spray over them if I can find a match for what’s in my head. Or they will have to defect to another legion …IMG_5454.thumb.jpeg.345aa8e5ecbe9f7e593d80933378f88a.jpeg

@LameBeard - this is from the Goonhammer review of the paints. Ruby Red I believe. I have to say they are some of the nicest metallics I have ever used. I wouldn't go quite as far as saying they are the step forward the Contrast/Speed paints were to general army painting, as metallics aren't used so much, but they are very good. Might be worth a try even if just to rescue a botch job!

Thanks @Pacific81 - looks better but still a bit brighter than I was thinking, I wanted something more like metallic red wine. Any suggestions appreciated gang - I might have to suck it up and pay the extra for Turbodork.

Sorry that was just an example of a red (which was probably more suited to Thousand Sons), they do darker ones too I believe

What a great range. There must be one that would work!

Scratch that, I misread the colour chart. Spilled ink in spoiler.

Spoiler

There are 20 base colours in Vallejo new metallics, plus highlight/shade and airbrush versions. The reds are Forge Red (similar to what I have, a sort of autumn leaves tinge), Ruby Red (close to the classic toffee apple) and Crimson Magenta (too pink for my needs).  So Turbodork still looking closer with Red  Queen (but maybe not dark enough?), Spicy meatball (maybe too meaty?) or Box Wine (seems unexpectedly brownish?). But v expensive once I add thinner and postage, hence still looking for options.

I tried shifting my Word Bearers with a coat of Voluptious Pink (closest Contrast paint I could see in the shop to Khorne Red). But it failed because (a) does actually have a touch of pink, and (b) I didn’t do thin coats properly, so killed the metallic on at least 3 out of 5. Very unusual finish now that is neither matte, gloss, satin nor metallic. I wouldn’t know how to describe it. Maybe a bit like brushed metal.

Amazing work @Smoke Frog, I am really enjoying following this project, the diorama the best bit so far - gotta love that little maw painted on a beaky!

First two squads for a smaller force of Iron Warriors I'd like to Count-As Primaris if I'd like to try 10th or 11th edition:

Mk.III Armour will be used as Gravis Armour, while Mk.II will signify Tacticus.

Next for this force will be  Heavy Support Squad with Multi-Meltas and Dreadnought converted out of a Imperialis Warhound to look like ye olde Space Crusade Dreadnought.

PS: Is my signature showing? On mobile so can't tell.

It's always great to see people clean up Plague Marines.

Your signature is showing on my iPad. Good plan.

Great job copying that artwork, love it!

This evening I’ve been glossing up a Command and Control squad for transfers etc.

(Yes, I need the change the filter on my airbrush booth)

Finished two robots, and finally took some better photos of my Esoterist and some of my warband leadership council plotting their next move after the Dropsite Massacre.

Harbingers of Taelus

@Smoke Frog those are just absolutely awesome, and love the extra effort with the photography.

I have finished half of Crusade-era War Hounds assauly squad. Have to say really enjoyed the MKII assault kit, which had a great retro appeal with the giant turbofans.

Step back in time, by way of comparison these were some pre-heresy World Eaters I think I did around 2008-09. Just off the back of the Heresy books and Heresy TCG, which started the whole niche of Heresy and pre-heresy. Well before any official minis then & the FW releases so this was all cobbled 40k kits, garage-cast resin from names you would find on forums and a lot of glued fingers and cut thumbs!

As an addendum to the above (Morgan Freeman/Stand by me voiceover narration) these got smashed to bits a few years later. A guy I was playing balanced one of the old metal box dreads (I remember it had no arms) on some flimsy cardboard terrain; you could see it wasn't going to be strong enough and it collapsed, the dread rolled down the hill and bowling-balled into them, absolutely blew them to bits.

The guy just picked up his dread, placed it back on the hill said, "oh, sorry" then went back to rolling dice.

Closest I have ever come to hitting someone in a GW store!

Hey all, I mostly stick to my 40k homebrew but I've had this guy on my mind for a while. I built the core of him sometime last year but never did anything else, however I've gotten the itch to finish converting him and making him my next project.

20251225_180215.thumb.jpg.ff2c08b4d9b39c24633fb9ac1d09662c.jpg20251225_180239.thumb.jpg.e15119319abf90bd0649dd895f33697c.jpg20251225_180252.thumb.jpg.85f234cd220ee43fc2131b2abcb56588.jpg

In my mind he's a Night Lords Praetor. I feel like the specific models I use for the core of the build don't give much of a Heresy vibe, so I'm thinking Late Heresy/Scouring, or maybe Artificer Armor? I scribed lines and sculpted stitches to turn the robe from cloth into flayed skin; looks rough right now but should come together once painted.

A bit of lore I'm brewing up: he is a bitter arbiter, weighing the scales of the soul. I wanted him to have a headsman vibe, hence the executioner's style sword, and the engraving on the flat of the blade fits into the arbiter motif. I was considering removing all the purity seal type strips decorating his armor but I'm going to turn them into twisted oaths of moment: his "hit list" so to speak of targets. I'll paint up some text and then decorate it with red X's or circles on his prime targets/ones he's gotten, hopefully should look really cool. Also need to fill in the Chaos star on the strip of skin on the backpack, assuming I keep that piece attached.
