Hoping to hear peoples thoughts on Chaplains and how they use them.

My personal choice is a Chaplain with a jump-pack with Master of Sanctity and Wise Orator from Faith and Fury, and most often choosing Catechisim of Fire for +1 to wound, and Canticle of Hate for +2 to charge and 6" consolidates (I always forget the consolidate) as well as the base litany of hate (re-roll hits in combat).

I find this provides a huge amount of flexibility in buffing shooting, helping units make charges out of deep strike, or hitting in combat with either thunder hammer VV's or aggressors. I tend to keep him close to my Smash Captain warlord with Swift and Deadly.

My perspective will always be from a Primaris pov, so remember that as context for any thoughts I share.

First Thoughts

1) Primaris Chaplain has limited mobility options so I either SftS, which limits his use of Litanies )even more now that we are forced out the Tactical Doctrine T4) or more often "recently" using Master of Ambush.

2) It has CP cost usually, but I can't imagine not buffing him with Master of Sanctity and Wise Orator.

3) While its tempting to purchase Benediction of Fury, I think Sacrosanct Rosarius wins by an edge if you make him your Warlord. Honestly I want to test that more though. Either way, I feel he can get some work done.

4) Ideally, Litanies get used on units with lots of shots and/or attacks. So, Aggressors and Centurions obviously, but I've found using MoA with Bolter Inceptors can brutalize a target. Use MoA. Bless the boys at top of the Turn. They jump toward their target of choice, Chappie finds a hole to hide in and watches carnage ensue. Deep striking with the Chappie just isn't worth it imo. Oh woe the day they give Primaris HQs some actual mobility ;)

I'll get into my thoughts on what Litanies are best, when and why on my next post.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just before my country went on lockdown I played some games with my primaris army as ravenguard successors. Chapter tactics are bolter fusilade and whirlwind of rage.

Master of sanctity, wise orator, master of ambush supporting 6 aggressors. I took 1 shooty litany (catechism) and 1 combat litany (did 2 games with canticle and 2 games with exhortation. He's a fantastic piece there for me. Aggressors wounding on 4s against T7 makes a big difference in output. If it was a big charge turn, litany of hate and exhortation on aggressors is horrific. 24 hits from 25 attacks from a charging aggressor unit happened a couple of times.

When my aggressors didn't need to charge, I have incursors as my forward screens so try to plan ahead for the next battle round to have one in litany range for exhortation. Again, off 16 attacks, I've had 15 and 17 hits in separate turns. I haven't popped gene wrought might on them yet for the giggle

General chaplain combos I'd like to try:

- jump pack, benediction, exhortation, mantra of strength backing up vanguard vets with utility to be a bash chaplain if needed

- jump pack, recitation, swift as the raven backing up inceptors (one of the only ways I'd take plasma inceptors in my lists as I don't run captains)

- master of ambush/jump pack/infiltrator strat with canticle of hate, litany of hate backing up sfts assault centurions. As the litanies are auras on this one, popping a CP for the ravens blade gives an 85% chance of making that charge out of deep strike

- recitation of focus, catechism of fire supporting devestator centurions. Grav jumps out there because of the infiltrators and grav strats. But I have a fondness for bolters obviously, so 2+ to hit rr 1s on 54 shots that could be +1 to wound is yummy
