Hello everybody,

I just get some wolves from a friend and I want some advice's what should be my next unit. I want to make a small Space Wolves force. Currently I have:

Ragnar Blackmane (the new Primaris Model)

10 x Grey Knights

5 x Wolf Guard Terminators

1 x Drenn Redblade (From Deathwatch Kill Team Cassius)

Welcome to the Fang.

I will try to give you some advice, but it is not the easiest thing at the moment as we just got a new rule book, and few of us gets games trying out our new rules.

About your minis. Ragnar is a great model, You say you have 10 Grey hunters, (I assume you mean Grey Hunters, and not Grey Knights), they have been our bread and butter for a long time and can be very good when equipped right. Our terminators has got a boost recently and are good on paper.

So lets see what you are "missing", you might want to get something heavy hitting, even though a terminator pack with thunder hammers are quite heavy hitting. Many will say Long Fangs, also known as devastators in other chapters, our Long Fangs are a wee bit better than devastators. Ragnar is a very good melee character, but he needs some way to get into close combat. A transport of some kind for him, Impulsor or maybe a Repulsor, he also needs some sort of body guard, sure hunters and terminator can be that, but neither of them can go in the same transport as him, so some sort of Primaris Marine, I would suggest Intercessors. If you get an Intercessor box you can split them, you have a battalion, rules wise. with Ragnar and Drenn, (I would maybe use him as a wolf guard battle leader) as HQ's and three troop choices, you can always split either the Grey hunters or the intercessors in to two packs.

So here is my advice what to get, in order.

1 pack of Intercessors

1 Impulsor

After that

Long Fangs

A Dreadnought of some kind.

But don't buy everything at once, it can get a bit overwhelming if you have to much on the painting table.

Welcome to the fang!

As people have said its a bit of an odd time at the moment as despite having a new book, most people cant play games.

Ragnar is an absolute beast now. You just need to get him up the table (so need either transports or a screen)

Wolf Guard Terminators are a good unit for us right now, theres a thread tiguirusX has been doing about his findings with wolf guard terminators which may be useful to you, (as well as there being a few other tactica threads on different units).

If you end up running multiple units of wolf guard look into arjac. Not only is he just cool as owt (throwing thunder hammers), but hes a good multiplier for your wolf guard (reroll 1s to wound and +1 attack).

You'll need to fill out troops and really to a new player id recommend going primaris - they're just better than our 'old' grey hunters and you're much more future proofed for future GW stuff (e.g. its likely non-primaris stuff wont be getting updates/renewed much in future - primaris will be).

Grey Hunters arent awful by any means so you'll still get some use from your 10man unit, but id look at adding some intercessors or incursors as your next troops.

After that, some long range firepower in the form of long fangs, or maybe a dreadnought (we have loads of different options for dreads - regular, wulfen, venerable, chaplain, or tkae Bjorn who is a beast).

I couldnt agree with this more. It can be really tempting to just buy loads and build just to get it on the table. I've done this with both my wolves and admech and regretted it as it wore me out painting wise.

Id say try do 500pts at once, paint it, play with it, see what you like and don't.

Welcome Brother (or Sister! bloody internet anonymity)!

All good advice here. The only addition a I will make here is save your bits from the grey hunters as the volume of space wolf upgrade bits in that box is massive and good for converting the more standard kits like primaris kits. Also a rune priest and wolf priest are good additions for hqs (especially with jump packs) when you are looking to expand your force further.

This is a very good advice, the Space wolf pack box is awesome for bits and upgrades, I bought one just for bits. The Space wolf primaris upgrade pack is not really worth it, but save every little scrap of the pack box, bare heads, shoulder pads, squirrel tails, weapons that you don't use from the SW pack box. You can also easily convert some of the minis to rune priests and wolf priest from that box.
