OP might have only 5 seats because the other 5 are already being used by a grav devastator squad.

"Nothing" is a perfectly sound option, but if you're not too worried about being screened out and you can get a charge bonus aura, you could throw in an ancient and some kind of beatstick character. Let the devs do their thing, then use them to soak overwatch for the character (firing on death via the ancient).

Four plasma veterans could also work; blowing themselves up without Captain support isn't a big deal, because again, ancient.

180p for 5 footslogging PA models basically screams for heavy weapons since otherwise you'd have a lot of points leftover. So Devastators are the only logical choice. Whether you go for Grav-cannons or Multi-melta or whatever is up to taste. I'd probably go for Multi-meltas personally.

5 Devs with Grav Cannons and a Cherub

Always.

I love how everything in power armour requires a safety harness to ride in a drop pod, but the cherub can just bounce around like a fly stuck in a window.

The other 5 seats are taken by a S6 T6 TH/SS Captain, a Lieutenant with a Power Sword and Bolt Pistol, 2 CS/SS Vets and one TH/SS Vet Sgt - the latter are the dedicated damage soaks for the Captain.

They're Salamanders.

I'm torn between 5 Sternguard and a Dev Squad - leaning towards the Sternguard 'cause I expect some screening chaff an they'd do a better job at clearing that than some Multi-Meltas.

Then again, all these guys want to be in melee so why not pack 5 more Vets with shields and swords in there?

If screen removal is what's up and you aren't into grav cannon then 5 company vets with combi-plasma. They can rapid fire 20 shots at regular guys or just fire plasma and over charge to take down tougher dudes (i.e. primaris). You've already got a captain and lieutenant hanging there so they can be pretty dangerous. Also only 125pts.

The Captain and his friends should be protected by the character rule anyway, so if anything the characters are the ones who paint an even bigger target on the Devs. Regardless of what you do, don't expect the Devs to stick around for more than the turn you drop them and if you want the characters to survive better pray to either get in melee or have lots of other targets closer to the enemy (aka coordinating your threats).

Sorry, I should have listed this :pinch:

Already in the pod are a S6 T6 TH/SS Salamanders Captain, 3 Vets with Shields, 1 TH and 2 CS and a Lieutenant with a Power Sword.

I'm torn bwtween a Dev Squad with Meltas and 5 Sternguard - the latter might do a better job at clearing away anything hindering a charge...

The final list isn't set in stone, so I could maybe just take 2 pods, 15 Sternguard and the Captain with his entourage...
