Surprisingly plausible.

Its discussed in Malevolence quite a bit. When referring to where Sanguinius was going next and talking about the Custodian that got wounded.

It also seems that the writer has a predictably dim view of the whole thing.

Honestly, it makes me wonder if they will ever expand on exactly who the writer is.

Plot twist: the writer is a member of a traitor legion / a remembrancer who was with the traitor legions who started loyal to Horus, but had a falling out with them at one point or another during the Horus Heresy and self-isolated himself to write the story of those times in a prison / as a hermit in exile. Maybe linked to the Thousand Sons / Alpha Legion to explain why they know so much?

Considers how insanely complementary the works are of the Alpha Legion.

...What if it was Alpharius?

The entire length isnt spent browbeating about the inferiority of every other Legion, especially the Ultramarines.

Wait nvm.

However, the text itself has been stated from the off to be the work of a mere mortal, an old man by the time that Retribution is written.

Though on the AL front, Malevolence cites and discusses an account called The Unbalanced Scales, seemingly the Legion's own account of the conflict.
