MrBeldaeva
Hey all, Decided to jump in and pick up some 40k as it's fairly popular around here, and some of my RL friends have jumped into it. I've always been into the Space Wolf aesthetic, so here we are. I've read through the buying guide, so I have a rough idea on what people recommend I get first, but I've been asked to split with another player who wants the Orks from Prophecy of the Wolf, so I'm looking to expand from there. To start I was thinking - Prophecy of the Wolf (Ragnar Blackmane + 10 Incursors/Infiltrators) Space Wolf Primaris Start Collecting (Battle Leader + 3 Aggressors + 10 Intercessors) But I've still got a little bit in the budget, so I'm curious whether you would recommend following the buying guide and grabbing another box of just plain Intercessors and maybe a pack of Wulfen or Eliminators, or whether it would be worth grabbing a second Start Collecting box of Primaris to round out the 20 recommended Intercessors and get some extra models thrown and grab maybe a Librarian in Phobos armour for converting? Happy to take any advice :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/363552-re-entry-into-the-hobby/ Share on other sites
Sugarlessllama
Oddly enough, I would think the Dark Imperium box would be good. You could use the multipart plastic intercessors to round out the two squads found there. It would give you lots of Primaris Marines, and with the two Space Wolf sets mentioned, you would have plenty of bits to make the DI marines plenty wolfy. Rune Priest Jbickb
Another box to consider is the space wolf infantry box. Mostly I recommend it for conversion bits as it has a ton of weapons and heads and wolf bits to make your primaris units a bit more wolf. But also it gives you a few bodies to make into HQs like a Rune priest and wolf priest which a good units to have. Jump packs might be worth grabbing off Ebay for them as well. But basically for the cost of a primaris charater you have all the bits you need for converting and 10 bodies to make into any non primaris dudes you like. It really is still a good buy if not for the old reasons. Gherrick
Another Primaris Start Collecting for additional Aggressors+Intercessors is probably worth it. Aggressors are so good to outflank with using Cunning of the Wolf strategem, and you want enough troop choices for two battalions for a 2000pt list. You can get a upgrade sprue of 5 jump packs if you want to add them to any non-primaris models. I'm a big fan of a non-primaris wolf priest with a jumppack. Dark Shepherd
If the Christmas Box (talons of Morkai?) is available anywhere Id say definitely get that Karhedron 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/363552-re-entry-into-the-hobby/#findComment-5514197 Share on other sites

A second Start Collecting! Space Wolves Primaris box is definitely not a waste. A unit of 6 Aggressors can do some work! Karhedron
I tend to think that a 1000 point Battalion is a good starting point for most armies. It gives you a solid core to build on but can also be assembled and painted in a reasonable time. The risk of buying too much too soon is it is easy to run out of enthusiasm for building. Prophecy of the Wolf + Start Collecting Primaris Wolves gives you a perfectly legal Battalion to get you started. I recommend building the units from Prophecy as Incursors as they work quite well with Space Wolves. HQs 120 points Ragnar 70 points Primaris Battle Leader with Power Axe and Bolt Carbine Troops 105 points 5 Incursors with Haywire Mine 105 points 5 Incursors with Haywire Mine 106 points 5 Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifles, Grenade Launcher and Thunder Hammer on the pack leader. 106 points 5 Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifles, Grenade Launcher and Thunder Hammer on the pack leader. Elites 111 points 3 Boltstorm Aggressors That comes to just over 700 points. I would recommend tolling up the Intercessors a bit. I really like Auto Bolt Rifle Intercessors with a Thunder Hammer on the Pack Leader. These are really dangerous for their points against a variety of units and are very Wolfy. The question then becomes "what else do you need?". The above list is solid but slow and does not have much in the way of long-ranged firepower. Whilst not the best value financially, my suggestion would be 2 Impulsors and a squad of Eliminators. Each Impulsor could carry 1 squad of Intercessors + an HQ. The Eliminators can infiltrate just behind the Incursors and give you a bit of firepower, particularly if you build them with Las Fusils. This gives you about 1000 points of army which will play very aggressively. The Incursors deploy in the midfield along with the Eliminators. The Intercessors and Characters rush up T1 in their Impulsors to support them giving you plenty of mid-range firepower and some decent melee capability. The Aggressors can go into Reserve using "Cunning of the Wolf" and pop up on Turn 2 to threaten something. Speaking of Stratagems, I would also spend 2CPs to make both Intercessor units Veterans. Combined with Ragnar's bonuses, they will be quite a force. From there you can look to increase but I think that gives you a good target to start with. P.S. If you buy Eliminators, save the spare parts. You can put the spare arms on some cheap bodies (like the Easy Build Reivers) to make a cheap second squad of Eliminators. Valerian
^This is probably about as optimized as you can possibly get, for a starting 1,000 point base list for anyone to start with and build from. Guest Triszin
If the Christmas Box (talons of Morkai?) is available anywhere Id say definitely get that I see it available at many retailers online still. I'm tempted, but I just got 2 more boxes of wulfen Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/363552-re-entry-into-the-hobby/#findComment-5514944 Share on other sites
Kassill
Definitely would lean into a second SC box to fill out that core element. The second Haldor is a great base for conversion into many different things so dont worry about having double of that. And Jbickb makes a good point, a box of regular PA wolves is a nice thing to have for some extra "bling", but that's really up to you and how you want your models to look. the bodies can still be useful for a number of things . If you want a bit more variety for model sake though, maybe grab an impulsor or two for the intercessors you already have. Plus that will give you a way to move Ragnar up the board so he can get into the thick of it. I'm rambling now Welcome back to the hobby and the Fang! MrBeldaeva
Think I've decided to go with the second SC box for now, then follow Karhedron's fantastic advise :) Cheers for the replies all. Will try and do a hobby blog as the mood strikes. mactire
Yeah, Primaris is the way to go, but pick up a box of the old wolf marines for bits and heads. Also the Space Wolf Terminator box is a good one as Terminators still seem to be viable unit, also there's plenty of bits to use with your Primaris newbies. BTW,welcome to the Fang and make sure to post some pictures as your Great Company grows. Cpt.Danjou
I wonder if not the ordinary SM Vanguard box might work as a start up too. Or am I way off? And yes the advice to get ordinary Space wolf pack boxes is great, the bits in that box are amazing.
