Could anyone tell me if back banners for sergeants would be proper for 30k? I haven't read all of the HH books so no direction there and don't think that any are shown in the 30k ruleset.

I know that they have fallen out of favor in 40k in recent years. I remember when every sergeant, chaplain, captain, dreadnought, etc. had one!

The back mounted Vexilla is common enough in 30K, while some Legions such as the Space Wolves go one step further with back banners - albeit simple leather ones rather than the glorious pieces of tapestry seen since the early days of 40K.

At the end of the day, they're your dudes - model them the way you want. Just be clear with opponents what is an actual Vexilla (with a rules effect) and what is just window-dressing.

Yeah I think the rule of thumb is as above. Go nuts with them if you like but just remember if using a Vexilla to let your opponent know!

Personally I’d like to see more back banners from a hobby point of view as I’ve always loved them. Especially on characters!

Historically they are used to single out a leader in the battlefield. Similar to how helmet crests worked etc. As we have crests already for Sgts and characters I guess back banners became just a “thing”.

I have been doing a little bit of searching in some of the HH books and came across this from The First Heretic  Pg.427: " ....reshaping around bannered sergeants....."   This was describing Raven Guard forces falling back and regrouping.  Now this could be describing Vexillas, back banners, or possibly just a bit of flourish from the author.
