Best Legions for Leviathans w/ Storm Cannon or Siege Claws?

Brothers, this is not a huge deal nor is it a priority (I'm working on something else currently that IS a priority for me)...but it just happens I got 2 Leviathans for an incredibly low price to the (price) point that I took them before the seller could have 2nd thoughts.

 

I'll have 1 with dual Storm Cannons and 1 with dual Siege Claws.  They do NOT have to be together in the same list, it just happens the price was so good I bought 2.  I welcome ideas with just 1 or the other.  Maybe I'll save the other one for 8th ed 40k.

 

So please feel free to treat these 2 Leviathans as separate.  I'll share how I'm thinking about it: I think I'll just do an Allied Detachment for 30k to support my Death Guard friend (who helped me score this deal), so it'll just be a HQ, Troops, Heavy Support, maybe other stuff.

 

I ask for best Legions, as that determines which Legion Tactics or Rites of War could be unlocked, but I'm just looking for ideas.  If that limited framework is not the best way to think about it, please feel free to re-frame the issue.  It's just a starting point.  Edit - Black Shields also good!

 

The only curve ball is, none of the black-armoured Legions please.  I previously played Shattered Xth and do not want paint black armour again.  So no Dark Angels, no Raven Guard, etc., please.  But Imperial Guard Templar Brethren is ok, I think, because I can use yellow.

I don't think the Legion makes a big difference but if you want something more rewarding hobby wise, you can't go wrong with World Eaters and twin claws...

I think legion does make some difference, and it also depends on how you want to deploy the dreadnought.

 

For example, blackshields cannot take dreadnought drop pods, so you would only be able to drop it in via Kharbydis assault claw.

 

If you’re going to drop it in, a nasty combo would be using it with Armillus Dynat (XXth), who grants +1 on the damage chart to all dreadnoughts and LA:alpha legion units in the enemy DZ. Suddenly that Str7 sunder weapon has the ability to explode a vehicle, and the claw is even more potent in combat.

 

If you’re foot slogging, I would be tempted to go Blood angels, twin storm cannons, phosphex and replace the heavy flamers with assault cannons. I’ve been on the receiving end of this, and it’s brutal.

Dark Angels with Ironwing get Tank Hunter on their dreadnoughts, so that would make them much more reliable with weaponry like Cyclonic Melta Lances (the Storm Cannon has Sunder anyway so doesn't need it).

 

Dynat and the Alpha Legion as previously mentioned also grants the +1 to the vehicle damage chart, which works nicely with drop Leviathans.

 

Blood Angels with their CCW's with inbuilt Assault Cannons are really nice, as you get to have a melee blender dreadnought with ranged firepower, albeit at a premium cost. Plus they get the super jump-nought which is downright terrifying if you use it right.

 

Thousand Sons get psychic dreadnoughts (Woooooo spooky mind powers). They're alright, just down to personal taste on how you use them.

 

Iron Hands are a super fluffy legion to use dreadnoughts with though, as are Iron Warriors. White Scars aren't a huge fan of them I believe so using dreadnoughts is one of those "You can, but it doesn't exactly make 100% sense in my head but OK".

Real shame, since Iron Hands give you blessed autosimulacra, and Dark Angels Ironwing gives bonuses to dreads.

 

As mentionned earlier, Blood Angels can take assault cannons. Ultramarines ones get to benefit from "interlocking tactics" (I think), and Death Guard can put chem munitions on their flamers.

Great feedback, thanks, exactly the typo of combos/loadouts I was curious about.  I'm exploring both.

 

It happens I really like both ideas.  Like just for the Blood Angels...I was thinking of something like Dornian Heresy-themed even.  That's super cool.

This was exactly the problem and I know it is a problem.  Iron Hands was so the obvious choice, in fact in the past I had run a Shattered Xth Grav-Flux Bombard Leviathan and boy did that flux stuff up.  But these other ideas...great stuff fellas, I find them more intriguing.

 

I'll also be asking a similar question for 8th (maybe 9th when I execute the plan) ed 40k, like I'll have 1 Levi for 30k and 1 for 40k, so don't feel this was a futile thought exercise if you see my posts there.  I'm like weighing the whole thing holistically, seeing which allotment makes sense.
