Okay, so we've lost:

Asdrubael Vect

Lady Malys

Decapitator (Keradruhak) sic?

Baron Sathonyx

Duke Sliscuss

(Kruella Devile- don't really remember this one)

I think that's the full

So if you could only have one, who and why?

Because I expect Vect to be a popular choice, he comes with an additional question: Do you want the Dias of Destruction character/ vehicle concept to be carried over, or would you rather see him on foot?

With the sisters and Necron update and with previous updates I think it's now pretty clear most armies are getting a large centrepiece character (primarchs, cawl, parade of saints for sisters, crons are getting the illuminor and the silent king). My bet is that Dark Eldar get vect on a centrepiece of some sort, the Dias makes sense imo. I imagine he'll be called Vect the living muse or something similar he's supposedly now god like which could be a very interesting thread to follow.

Something the dark eldar codex suffers from (IMO) is lack of characters special or otherwise. My hope is that we:

1) get a named Archon, Lady Malys doesn't make a huge amount of sense here IMO she's sort of declared herself for Ynnead so wouldn't really make sense for a DE specific character

2) create some out of the (current) box characters; bikes, Hellions and winged, mecha-tendrils. A mandrake character would be excellent

If I had to pick one Lady Malys would be good, Vect needs a rival and she had some interesting background but it would be nice to get any of the former characters back. Kheradruakh is the guy you're looking for, he might have even been the first Mandrake

Thanks for reminding me how to spell Kheradruakh with searching for my copies of older dexes. And yeah, totally the Mandrake guy- plus two extra arms if I recall correctly. That picture of him sitting on the mountain of skulls... Damn I love that pic. This guy is my second choice; I love Mandrakes, and I'd like to see him leading them into battle.

Thanks to for the reminder about Malys; interesting that they could release her as a reborn model for the Ynnari faction.

I agree about Vect being a centerpiece model, and about every faction getting one, and he's my bet too.

My personal wish is Baron Sathonyx. Hellions are the lowliest of the wych cults, and I'd like to see them get some love. Sathonyx leading them would go a long way. Always thought GW dropped the ball on him, because if he had been released in tandem with Gangs of Commorragh, the could have really made some cross platform integration dollars.

Similarly, one of the BSF expansions included a Drukhari ship stolen from Vect AND the character who stole it, but the character was never given a model because they weren't an explorer; their role was to sit in their stolen ship and offer their services to the highest bidder. I don't know about any of you, but I would so much have appreciated a BSF model of that character. It would nowhere near make up for any of the characters we lost, but it least it would have been a "Hey, we are thinkin about you guys."

Having said that, I've got my hopes up that 9th is good for us.

Even though the Dais is supposed to be a modified Ravager... I'd like it to be a Tantalus, to be honest. It just seems a disservice to give Vect a Dais of Destruction again, but have it be a dinky little Ravager instead of a big huge Tantalus.

Lady Malys was/is my favorite DE character but there is a big reason why I wouldnt pick her (not even or especially not for Ynnari); Yvraine... when we saw her first glimpse I was 100% convinced it was lady malys.. a harlequin meets wych vibe, an elaborate sword that for some reason needs to be held with some sort of powerglove, the gyrinx wich could very well be a visual representation for what/whom she is talking to when alone... at that point the fan was just a small element of that conviction. And when she turned out not to be lady malys.. my mouth dropped even further than the initial reveal ;)
They could have easily made it so that she was lady malys with her still having a pre-commoragh backstory and fulfilling that whole prophet of Ynnead role, imho would have made an even greater impact... it would also have strong implications for "cegorachs final jest to trick slaanesh".. and in my headcanon, Lady Malys = Yvraine = Lady malys. So.. dont need her anymore ;)

Vect is the obvious second choice then, and yes, he needs his dais.. but I dont think it should be an excisting vehicle.. instead completely its own thing and not too big or long (as it distracts from vect imho.) and importantly focus strongly on the covens and nightmare dimension elements of dark eldar as well... his retinue especially. As for vect himself I imagine him sitting on the dais with arms forward.. either some shadowy shenanigans or a dimensional artefact.
Then have a second model (hired as one but with its own stats.) wich is some sort of nightmare dimension avatar that mimics Vects visuals but more mandrakey.. (so imagine vect having an elaborate facemask, then the avatar has that face as its face etc.) in chronicles of riddick the lord marshal has this temporal/warp ability that kind of vibe...

But both krehadurak and remaking Urien Rakarth are high up there as well... the nightmare elements of dark eldar.

The Dais was a modified Ravager solely for the same reason that our two Troops choices at the time were "Warriors" and "Warriors, but in a Raider". Our Codex was very minimal, so they had to work with what they had. Want a special character riding a tank? Well, the Ravager is already our "tank", so he rides that, now there's no need to make a new special thing just for him.

I'd love to see Vect come back, but as a Katakros/Silent King/Triump of St Katharine style "diorama" model. Make his model absolutely massive, some sort of super-Raider with an ornate throne on it, with his Court scattered over the rest of the vehicle. He shouldn't really be a combat powerhouse, but a floating provider of buffs/debuffs. Have him benefit any Drukhari army, with a boost if they're Black Heart Kabal. As he takes damage, his buffs/debuffs disappear, as particular court members are destroyed.

Maybe even take inspiration from the Morathi model in AoS, and have it that Vect can't attack himself in his Dais form, but once that model is reduced to 0 Wounds, you can place the "Vect on foot" model anywhere in base contact before removing it, and only then does he start actively taking part in the combat himself?

The Baron would be great too as something very different. Would be nice to have more HQ options for at least Kabals and Cults. A Dracon and Hellion captain or something would give us some much needed choice and flexibility.

I agree Vect is most likely, and he'll probably get something fancy with an update. The question is as ever what and when. Well, I suppose the real question is why we can't get them all back but you know :P With the plethora of kits the toasters are getting there may be hope as the current DE range is well stocked with excellent models so this means plenty of room for new :)

I'm very hopeful. After I got over my knee jerk reaction to the announcement of 9th, I actually came around to thinking that 9th makes it more likely that we get a dex reboot, not less. A dex reboot would be accompanied by more new kit than you'd be likely to get with a campaign book.

And yeah, I also kinda thought the Yvraine model would have made a great Malys too.

Love the idea of Vect having a meat/ shadow puppet sinister giant thing too- really, great ideas and a lot of love for all of these characters.

I'm fairly convinced that Yvraine's model was made off the initial design work done on a Malys model. When the Ynnari stuff was started, they made use of what they already had lying around.

What were the Yncarne and Visarch, then?

I miss Lady Malice. Yvraine, I think was suppose to be her but someone got the big idea to create a 4th kinda corsair army. Being that the corsair is a forge world army create Ynarri for G w's take on it. I miss the baron too.

Wow, should read more before posting. What was said in the post before me, exactly.

Kheradruakh the Decapitator would be my choice, aside from a named Archon. Kheradruakh is nasty, a ten thousand year old warrior with four arms and a great ability to take out anyone shy of a Primarch- now the King of the Mandrakes after Gulliman's awakening where he killed Vect's henchman Sythrac and the Shadow Kingdom of Aelindrach took over a major section of Commorragh. Making him a big part of the narrative would be interesting, as we know very little about the Mandrakes or their motives.

So I just reviewed Preview 3 from earlier in the year where they revealed Ascension- the last Blackstone expansion, and confirmed that there would be new explorers as well as the giant spindle drones (which look suspiciously Newcron to me- but that's another thread).

I've gone on record saying that GW missed a huge opportunity to release a new DE character. They included her ship- or rather the ship she stole from Vect; they even gave her a name and a cool Precipice phase ability, but no model.

But now I'm hopeful that they merely delayed this character, rather than actually missed the opportunity as I had initially assumed. If it was a delay, it's kinda cool, because it's like she didn't trust the other explorers to risk the fortress herself. I've said it before, but this character is a great gateway to Vect in terms of ongoing, cross-platform story line.

From what I'd heard, that's basically not what the Dark Eldar character is. She's a broker, not someone who actually risks her life going into the Fortress itself.

Really though, I'm hoping against hope that we get a bit of an expansion for each of our three sub-factions. We're at a weird half-way point, where our rules treat us as almost 3 different armies, but we're still bunched together under "Drukhari". It's like when the Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus were two different books, each half a codex that was eventually combined into a greater whole. We've got the "combined" bit, but only in a way that almost punishes us.

They either need to remove the stupid "you lose Kabal tactics if you take so much as a single Wych or Wrack in the same detachment",  make it so that you can pick a Cult, Coven and Kabal for each detachment, or expand each of the three into being a small range all of their own.

Not like the full Cult Mechanicus size for each, but just more than one unit in each slot for each of the three. Enough that we can make a full Kabal army without having each slot just the same unit spammed multiple times.

You heard correctly- the character is a broker; but here's the thing- she didn't have to be; the broker ability is on the ship card, meaning that if they had made an explorer, she'd still be a broker- she'd just have the ability to enter the Fortress if she felt like it. Because here's the thing: she stole a ship- a prized piece of technology from Asdrubael Vect! That's not a backstory for a character who is supposed to be "risk averse."

I agree that I would like to see new units for each of the 3 pieces of the DE puzzle.

- Grotesques will definitely get a new kit if they do a dex update

- for Kabals, I think we would get a named Archon, since Drazhar isn't that. Like many, I suspect this would be Vect as a centerpiece model

- They may redo Lilith for Wyches

But what I would want as new units for Kabal and Cult would be Trueborn + Hekatrix Bloodbrides. They've been in the dex before, but never with their own kit- we were always expected to just represent them on the table with regular troops. Another thing I'd like to see get some love are the Court of the Archon Models- particularly the Slyth. I actually really like the Lhamean and Medusae sculpts; if only they were plastic multipose with different options.

I'd like to see each sub-faction get at least one Elites, Fast Attack, and dedicated Heavy Support. Preferably a non-tank for each too, although a Kabalite Heavy Support that isn't a Raider might step on the toes of Scourges, unless they give us some sort of construct.

As for the character, what I meant is that she doesn't seem like a hands-on type. Sure, she stole a ship from Vect, but that doesn't mean that SHE stole the ship personally.

Okay, so we've lost:

Asdrubael Vect

Lady Malys

Decapitator (Keradruhak) sic?

Baron Sathonyx

Duke Sliscuss

(Kruella Devile- don't really remember this one)

I think that's the full

So if you could only have one, who and why?

Because I expect Vect to be a popular choice, he comes with an additional question: Do you want the Dias of Destruction character/ vehicle concept to be carried over, or would you rather see him on foot?

all of them but Vect and Decapitator (because I love Mandrakes this edition - i know that his rules used to be very bad in each edition I remember so far).

I expect everyone would say the Baron, but I am very sure he would not be that good in this edition.

The problem with Malys though is that, as she was when she had rules, there's nothing to distinguish her from Yvraine. Female Eldar, intrinsic link to a God, armed with a bladed fan and a sword, Vect has a strong dislike of both. One just has a pet cat and psychic powers. Unless she's changed, Malys is just Drukhari Yvraine.

  • 2 weeks later...

When I first read parts of the (then new) 5th ed codex, something about the concept of flying ships with kabalite warriors, lead by a space elf pirate king really spoke to me, so I'd put Duke Sliscus, but I'm afraid he may be redundant with Vect on Dais of Destruction in 9th edition.

Kheradruakh and the Mandrakes (yet another great Metal band name) would be awesome and deserve an updated plastic kit - make Kheradruakh's model perched atop his pile of skulls like in that picture and you're onto a winner imo.

However, Kabals definitely need a standard HQ named character (I believe Vect should be LoW) - Malys and Sliscus each have potential problems, could they simply create a new named character?
