Hello, I played Templar’s from 3rd to the end of 5th and threw in the towel, but I’m considering getting back in with the news of the crusade format. I just saw today that Templars got some rules in the Faith and Fury book, but I’m not sure I want to run out and drop $80 on that and the space marine codex without some insight . So a few initial questions:

Are Land Raider Crusaders still a troop transport option for crusader squads?

Are initiates still equipped with either bolt pistol/ cc weapon, or bolter?

Hoping they didn’t completely gut the heart and soul of Templar’s and allow psykers?

Do they still have vows, or are you forced into playing with command points?

I’m only interested in “casual” play so I’m hoping to be able to field what I have without a need for new models.

Thanks!

LRC are not a dedicated transport anymore. But in the current force org you want to have them as sepperate entry. In new edition we dont know many things but I think it should be no problem at all.

Initiates are still eqipped with boltpistol and CC weapon or bolter.

BT do not have psykers and BT are one of the best Anti-Psyker armies but its allowed to take Psykers as allies (not just Grey Knights)#

Vows are gone (very sad) but except of "accept any challenge, no matter the odds" (which used to be my favourite vow) they exist as stratagem (2 of them in the Vigilus Detachment).

In a narrative setting /  game you can have a lot of fun and BT are great although all other chapters have "more" specific rules then our beloved chapter. But within the next 2 months there is a new edition release and it seems very nice so far.

Thank you for your response Medjugorje.

I'm a bit bummed about the LRC not being a dedicated transport, but only because I have several. I suppose its not too relevant because there doesn't seem to be a standardized force organization chart like there used to be.

I assumed vows were gone, so thanks for confirming.

Are sword brethren still an elite choice? I thought I heard something about them being rolled into crusader squads. If so, do they lead them?

Glad to hear BT can still be fun to play. I was hoping to be able to use them as a ready force I can jump into any game point size once the new rules drop.

Well-met brother,

Sword Brethren are gone as a standalone unit entry, but can be represented by eg. Company Veterans.

There is a pretty great resource online that has all the datasheets and rules for all the factions and the BRB rules, and it is kept up to date with the latest FAQ. Pretty handy to avoid buying expensive books with a new edition around the corner: http://games-workshop.ru/

You will find all the force org stuff in there too under the 'Matched Play Rules'.

For 8e at least, it basically doesn't matter: nobody ever runs out of force org slots. Although the "Rule of 3" means you can't take more than three LRCs in a 2000-point game, three LRCs plus their contents and characters basically gets you to 2000 points anyway.

The bigger problem is that Land Raiders just aren't any good.

It may change in the next edition, as their biggest failing, particularly for the LRC, is that once tagged in combat, they are useless for the rest of the game. In 9th apparently they will be able to fire into combat, so that'll be nice.

They're still too expensive however, and lack their old durability.

Sword Brethren are now Company Veterans. But in Vigilus Defiant you can find a Special Detachment for Black Templars called Sword Brethren. Each Captain (marshal), Helbrecht, Champion and Company veterans get the KEYWORD "Swordbrethren" and have Access to a very powerful WL-Trait, a mehh (but well known) relic and 2 Stratagems

That is not a Rule. It is only a suggestion for organized play.

Quite, but it's almost universally followed.

It's also a good way of limiting purchases.

thats a rule for organized play. Not just a suggestion. They decided to make it official in Chapter approved 17 I think.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I have the main rule book, but I'll take a look there for the rest of the info.

Not too concerned for using the Sword Brethren by name, just hoping I can use them somewhere in the force, considering their varied special weapons.

you can use them as company veterans and as vanguard veterans.

advantage for company veterans is their ability to take wounds from characters (which BT are very good in gamewise because 5+++ against Mortal wounds)

advantage for vanguard veterans is their size which can be 5-10 while company veterans are just 2-5.

And not to forget the access to jump packs.
