Skywrath
Title. So the primer screwed my miniature up something awful, where the details are too thick to paint. Any ideas how to get rid of it? pawl
I wrote a guide to stripping miniatures here, if that would be useful? =] Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539040 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
Assuming a plastic or metal model, isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) or ethanol (sometimes known as surgical spirit*) should work on acrylic paint (they're the active ingredient in most brush cleaners and/or airbrush cleaners). Methylated spirits (also known as denatured alcohol) should also work. Given the current climate, IPA may be hard to come by/expensive. * may be ethanol, IPA, or a mix of the two Edited June 10, 2020 by Firedrake Cordova Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539050 Share on other sites

Skywrath
What about using hand-sanitizer that has an alcohol component on it? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539065 Share on other sites
pawl
What about using hand-sanitizer that has an alcohol component on it?I would recommend against it. The lower the percentage of alcohol, the less effective it's going to be. When stripping metal models for example acetone is very, very effective. Nail varnish remover that contains acetone might eventually get the job done, but it's comparatively useless. I would imagine this would be quite similar. You could it course give it a go, but for the amount of time it would likely take you I would say you're better off just spending £10 (or equivilent) on some ISO. Rik Lightstar
Biostrip20 is brilliant and non toxic, it's about £12 shipped in the UK and is safe for use on plastic, metal and resin. Acetone will certainly soften plastics if left for too long. pawl
What Rik said, don't use acetone on plastics! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539288 Share on other sites
Skywrath
Unfortunately the model was beyond fixing and I had to order another one (one of the arms came off and dissapeared in the process of scrubbing). This thread has been archived in my bookmarks for future purposes, thanks for your input! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539479 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
I can only speak for the UK, but I've had no issue getting hold of IPA from eBay, although Amazon seems to be struggling. Availability now is a lot better than it was in early May, although apparently can vary a bit at the trade level. The price is noticeably higher than it has been, though. I thought it best to include alternatives just in case. Here is how the model would have looked like, if I known that humidity messes with your primer. Shame, it was my finest conversion yet Hopefully this new apothecary comes soon, I can replace his head with the one I salvaged, and just glue a shoulder plate on his shoulder pad. https://imgur.com/a/c8iGrSU Edited June 11, 2020 by Skywrath Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364452-removing-contrast-spray-from-miniature/#findComment-5539554 Share on other sites

The prices seem better, and I'm not forced to buy chemicals branded for nail technicians! How much would you expect prices to drop by?
