Can anyone suggest a better replacement airbrush for a Paasche Talon under $200?

I have had and used this one for many years. It works okay but the needle and nozzles are very fragile. Typically I can only get a no.1 needle to work well with the no.2 nozzle and that's it (out of 4 nozzle needle combos). It struggles to make very fine points. I currently use it with a cheap tankless compressor.

My last nozzle is finally fluting (breaking) and buying replacements has been hit and miss. Sometimes they send the wrong parts or they are already broken.

I'm assuming US Dollars are at play here?

I'd recommend the Badger Sotar 20/20 with a (Fine) .2mm Nozzle and (Fine - Black) #1 Needle. Check out different sales online and you'll find it for under $200. Or wait for the Badger Birthday sale.

I've been using one for a few years now (along with a Patriot 105) and I'm very happy with its performance.

Thanks, that one looks very nice. Have you had to replace your needles/nozzles and are those parts very expensive?

I haven’t had to replace a needle yet, but I did manage to ruin my first nozzle by being too rough when cleaning it physically - now I use my ultrasonic cleaner to periodically clean all the front end parts and I haven’t had any problems since.

The cost of replacement parts varies considerably between dealers here in Australia. I couldn’t comment on what it’s like in the States.

One of the things you want to check before buying is to check the availability and pricing of parts where you are.  As you're in the US, it's probably best to look at Badger (Patriot 105, Renegade, and Sotar ranges are popular with modellers), and Iwata (Eclipse is a popular choice).  Harder & Steenbeck make nice airbrushes (I have one), but they're much cheaper over here in Europe than they are in the US.

Hi,

I have had a Talon for 3 years, and although I was quite happy with it, the moment I got a Badger Patriot 105 I hardly used the Talon any more. Cleaning it is a breeze, it's almost impossible to damage the needle or nozzle (I'm on my third nozzle and second needle with the Talon), and thanks to that, I am getting far more consistent results.

I would also mention that you can get it in three different needle sizes: 0.5 (the one I use the most), 0.3 and 0.7. There is a set with all three needles and nozzles for under $120 - you can't possibly beat that in value for money in any other brand.

Besides, if you found the nozzle in the Talon flimsy, the Sotar would be a very poor choice (no offense to Ranulf, but I think horses for courses applies here).

Regards,

Enrique
