There is no "set" distance, it is entirely up to your discretion. A good practice is to consider the models you'll be using, and whether of not they will fit. You may have smaller infantry only gaps, and then a main boulevard large enough for an Imperial Knight.

That's usually how I treat table terrain set-ups. Make it so there's gaps in certain areas that anything can fit through, and other gaps that only infantry/small vehicles can fit through.

 

For example, when I helped my (sadly now-closed and previous) FLGS with tournament prep, we used my Brass Scorpion (I was playing World Eaters) as a benchmark. If my Scorpion could fit through some areas of the board, anything people could bring to a 1750 Tournament could.
