Burni
My mate and I are looking at playing 9th using the Crusade system. Neither of us has any experience with campaigns or any kind of narrative stuff (we've always played beer & pretzels style matched play games), so the guided system appeals to us a lot. From what I've read, you need a 50 power roster (Order of Battle) to start off and you pick forces from that. Our first 9th games will likely be 25 power Combat Patrols for example. I'm going to use it as a motivator to get my slow burn Primaris only Ultramarines on the table. I think he'll go with his new SoB army that he's been doing during lockdown. But he could use his Executioner heavy Cadian force. I currently have the Primaris from Dark Imperium, Shadowspear and some characters from issues of Conquest. I'm planning on getting Indominus and a box of multi-part Intercessors. Here's what I'm thinking (basing these pwr costs off the current codex & the stuff on WHC): 1x Primaris Librarian in Phobos Armour (5 pwr) 1x Primaris Lieutenant with Power Sword (4 pwr) 5x Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifles (1x grenade launcher & maybe Sgt has something?) (5 pwr) 5x Intercessors with Auto Bolt Rifles (1x grenade launcher & maybe Sgt has something?) (5 pwr) 5x infiltrators (5 pwr) 3x Bladeguard Veterans (5 pwr) 5x Hellblasters (6 pwr) 3x Eradicators (5 pwr) 3x Eliminators with Bolt Sniper Rifle (4 pwr) 3x Outriders (6 pwr) How does that look? Any glaring threat counters I'm missing? Have I gone too heavy on support picks? Dracos
Nothing you've chosen is bad but really it’s more important what you plan on doing with it and how the pieces work together. For instance I love Phobos units like Infiltrators and Eliminators but with your meta the former aren’t going to help you much and the latter really needs two squads focus firing to be useful. I’d substitute the Assault Intercessors you’re getting in and bring them in an Impulsor or from strategic reserve after the crime have started. I would also use the Inceptors from Dark Imperium as a Tag Team unit with the Outriders ... which leads me to the only model I’m suggesting that looks like you don’t own - because spending money hurts :) - Get the Outrider Chaplain. He can lead your Vanguard of Outriders and Inceptors and the Phobos Captain can buff your midfield units that are working the mission objectives. Two cents PS: Narratively I want to do a Crusade where I start with the Judicar and a Lieutenant and promote them to Captain and Chaplain as the Crusade progresses :). Hope you guys have a blast Edited July 7, 2020 by Dracos Burni and HighMarshalAmp 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364952-building-a-crusade-order-of-battle/#findComment-5556978 Share on other sites
Burni
Ah interesting. So swap the 5 infiltrators for 5 Assault Intercessors? I assume they cost the same power. Fitting the Inceptors in might be tricky, they are 7 power for 3. A fair chunk when you only have 50 to spend. It’s also an awkward number for totalling up without wasting power points (Combat Patrol at 25 for example). I do love the models though - they and 5 Hellblasters are the only fully finished painted Primaris units I currently have. As a matter of interest, since in power they cost the same, would the plasma Inceptors be a lot better? (although I’d have to buy a box...) I was surprised you mentioned an Impulsor, I always thought it having a single tank in 40k was a bad idea (1 is none etc) as it would stand out and be focus fired. I assume it would need a shield dome? Is it pretty tough? It’s a model I intend to get a some point but I thought it would need to come in pairs. But yeah, interesting what you say about having a fast moving half of the army led by the Chaplain. Something to think about. Thanks for the advice! BluejayJunior
It kinda depends on the points levels. In smaller games, even one vehicle is fairly survivable because the opponent doesn't usually have dedicated anti-tank firepower to waste it in a single turn. And if they do, that usually means that don't have enough light firepower to deal with infantry. When you get up to 2000 points, a single vehicles isn't usually great because most people can deal with it easily. But these things can also change as we get into the new edition, so take that with a grain of salt. Everything you have looks fine. For playing crusade, I would try to find a theme or narrative for your army and build from there. MegaVolt87
Maybe an invictor suit or an ETB primais dread for a cheap vehicle option if you don't know what armour you want. Won't break the bank or the fun of your games that way. Doghouse
I like Impulsors, they are quite versatile in their loadouts. The Bellicatus missile launcher especially giving anti armour, horde and air. Rik Lightstar
I'm going for an Invictor Warsuit as my first "vehicle" choice for my Crusade list. They're pretty fast and deployment shenanigans help too. They have 2 decent weapon options and some viable combat capability too.
