Skull helms on Dark Apostles?

Could it work? I was planning on using the Chaplain with skull and aquila crozius as a basis for my dark apostle but just wondering if the skull helm would fit? The eagle iconography could work as the EC often use it to mock the loyalists, but not sure on the skull helmet. 

If it comes back into stock I'd do a head swap as resin is easy to cut, but atm can only find metal ones on ebay which is possible but a pain so thinking of leaving it like that.

Well the skull helmet on Chaplains represents the Emperor for various reasons but mostly because they are there to ensure nobody steps out of line. Doesn't really makes much sense for Dark Apostles to do the same, no? :sweat:

it would be very chaos though to mock the SM Chaplains by twisting their icons by using it themselves. If you like it, go for it.

Yes, it is definitely appropriate. In Anthony Reynolds' third Word Bearer book (Dark Creed) the protagonist, Marduk, dons an ancient suit of terminator armour once worn by a legendary Dark Apostle of the Legion at the Siege of Terra. This suit comes with a skull helm.

As the position of the Chaplain in most chapters were invented by the Word Bearers and the Lodges, a skull helmet would be fitting for an Apostle, just add some horns.

The skull helm dates back to pre-heresy times. I honestly wish Dark Apostle kits had them instead of the junk they have now.

 

I was using Draznicht from the Dark Vengeance (more recently Armies of Vengeance) set as an Apostle a while back. His helm is actually a horned skull so it fits pretty well with some minor weapon adjustments and a different backpack (I went with the old CSM Champion pack, the one with a Daemon head sticking its tongue out.

Yeah I should clarify that I meant they wouldn't use the skull helmets in the same way Chaplains do. Skulls in general are of course never out of place in a chaos army.

I like a skull helm on a dark apostle, my word bearers even still wear predominantly black armour to represent their status.

Skull helms work well for Dark Apostles as mentioned, there's a lot of easy justification for it all the more so if your chapter is recently (in the galactic sense at least?) turned. That's why I kitbashed my own Dark Apostle:
