What do I need or what is the best way to get involved in the game? Can I just buy this new Ryza book or do I need some sort of core rule book? Are there other books I should have or do I not need them?

Models are models but I am curious about the rules / how to play / lore / etc.

The easy answer is probably but the starter box but I am wondering if you don't care about terrain is there another way to go. It's likely that I won't be playing a game any time soon, so I am looking for what books I need and perhaps a few models to start with.

If there’s a still a battle group get that, 100%. The game is more fun for me than 40k [gasp] and it plays on a 4x4 so a dinner table is totally doable.

You will need a rulebook, each expansion book has legio rules (e.g. chapter rules) for some legios so you’d only REALLY need the book that has the rules you want to use. There are also different maniple rules for different army lists but that data is all out there on the internet.

The models are great and so long as you like painting trim they’re okay to paint if you work in sections. The game is really fun and worth starting if you have people nearby to play with.

*Edit: I don’t condone copyright violations but if you search well enough you can find ePub or pdf versions of the rulebook out there to read before you decide to invest in the game. It’s got the “I go” “you go” mechanics that most game designers are moving to and feels like a cross between Battletech and 40k if that makes any sense. Does that sound like fun to you? There are some great battle report videos on YouTube to watch through and see if the style or scope appeals to you. I love giant robots so I’m totally biased.

Man Reads Book (GMG) has quite a number of Adeptus Titanicus battle reports that're worth a look.

The ones after the above are numbered (EP2, 3, 4, etc).

You'll need the core rule book.

I think the best currently available box to start with is the Core Game box, it contains 2 Reavers, 2 Warhounds, 2 Cerastus lancers, the rule book (version 2.0 including errata as of date of publication) and various other things. There is no terrain in that one.

As already pointed out by Fajita Fan, the other books are only really needed if you want to use some legio specific rules or maniples that are into these books. Lore contained in the books is fair but on the light side, don't expect a deep dive. Best is to have a look at the product descriptions and find some YouTube reviews. There is also plenty of comments here discussing the various releases which are worth reading. I personally buy every new book for AT.

Titandeath https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Titandeath-sb-2019

Doom of Molech https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Adeptus-Titanicus-Doom-Of-Molech-EN-2019

Shadow and Iron https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Adeptus-Titanicus-Shadow-And-Iron-EN-2020

Defence of Ryza upcoming

Now, I'll be going further than the required books.

Command terminals can be downloaded https://www.warhammer-community.com/2019/05/14/adeptus-titanicus-downloadable-command-terminalsgw-homepage-post-2fw-homepage-post-1/ Note that they cover Warlord, Reaver, Warhound, Questoris knights and Cerastus knights, so far no downloadable command terminals for Acastus Porphyrions or Warbringer titans. I would advise against buying the specific Acastus command terminals as they will probably be redone at some point (the original model's rules are quite strong, too strong).

For new models, starting with the Warbringer, command terminals and specific weapons cards are included in the boxes. Curious to see if that will be the case for the new Cerastus variants (which are covered already in the Cerastus knights terminals).

Depending on how many titans you want to field and their loadouts, additional weapons cards might be needed. Best to first have a look and feel for your favourite loadouts. They can be found in the Core Game box, or in additional packs for the Warlord https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warlord-Weapons-Card-Pack-2018-eng, Reaver https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Reaver-Weapons-Card-Pack-2018-eng and Warhound https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warhound-Weapons-Card-Pack-2018-eng. Again, have a look at the descriptions to see how many of each you'll get.

In terms of models, it depends on your preferences and constraints. The Warlord is iconic and a lovely model to build, I would definitely add one. The Reaver is iconic as well and also a lovely model to build but you'll hate its legs, they can be extremely tricky to build. The Warhound is very nice and quite easy to build. The Warbringer includes some teachings from the Reaver's legs and is therefore easier to build. Dry fitting before gluing is a must, if anything dry fit 3 or 4 times before gluing. Magnets are a must as well, especially if you want to easily alternate weapons between games. They will require some work depending on the model. Best is to go through the various project logs here to see the tips and tricks we used to build our models.

At one point in time, you'll care about terrain. Terrain is impacting the games, you'll see in the various battle reports posted here and elsewhere, and it also allows for cool modeling projects. My advise there is to mix some of the AT terrain components (civitas imperialis, spires, manufactorum) with other stuff in order to create larger structures. If you go full AT terrain this can become expensive quite easily.

The Grand Master Edition https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Adeptus-Titanicus-Grand-Master-Ed-2018-eng is not a "starter box" per se. As of today the rule book it contains (v1.0) is superseded by the one in the Core Game box (v2.0). In terms of models, the Warlords are both armed with volcano cannon and apocalypse launchers and the questoris knights have since received an upgrade sprue with missile launchers and gauntlets. This said, it offers a small discount vs. buying its components separately. But if you want the other Warlord, you'll need to add the upgrade sprue https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warlord-Titan-Plasma-Annihilator-Frame-2019. So, I would advise to have a good look at the different components, see what you really want and compare costs. When AT was released, the Grand Master Edition made sense as there was no other box available and it offered a discount vs. buying the components separately. Nowadays, it is a very different story.

You can also check the battle reports by the 30k channel. It's really well made and they review their army lists at the beginning which helps understand.
I think it's their only one available on Youtube but they have other on the 30k channel websites which have subscriptions (and I think a week trial if you want to check more video).

It's been a while since I've been to Oskee Wee Wee territory other than Fishing World, so I'm not sure on the hobby shop front but if you are looking to purchase stuff I can recommend Lords of War in Oakville or Meeplemart in Toronto. Prices are better at Meeplemart & their store is fantastic providing we get around this covid thing so you can actually go into the store, online ordering/delivering & curbside pick up only at the moment.
