I’m sure that most of you know NMM: non-metallic metal. Using paints that aren’t metallic, to make something look metallic. Yellows, browns and creams for gold, for example.

An example I grabbed off Google:

And some may know SENMM: sky earth non metallic metal.

One of the most famous examples, again care of Google:

And there’s simple TMM: True metallic metal. Using metallic paints. Leadbelcher for iron, steel, etc.

I haven’t the time to learn and practise NMM, never mind SENMM, but do use TMM and did recently give SETMM a try: sky-earth true metallic metal.

Now, I’m not saying this is comparable at all to NMM or SENMM, but I think it made the plate look reflective and simply more interesting.

I painted the armour Leadbelcher, shaded it Nuln Oil, and stippled on Stormhost Silver, more on the upper half.

I used Agrax Earthshade to brown the lower half-to-third of the plates, and Guilliman Blue glaze on the upper third/half. Once that was dry I did another dose of each colour to their respective thirds.

A third dose could be done to deepen the blue.

I hope this was, at least, interesting :)

Technique done on a 40k Dark Eldar Medusae body.

Edit: removed AoS images.

Really nice work! SENMM has always stood (to me at least) as visually stunning, but at the same time a little too 'artistic' - even when it's done well, such as in the example you posted, it's clear that it's a painted effect. I like your TMM version better as it's much more subtle and therefore realistic, but still captures the visual effect of making the armour look really reflective.

Thanks for sharing!

An excellent idea, and nicely executed. I'll have to bookmark this tutorial; I have an idea percolating that requires a chrome-like finish, and this might be easier and more effective than actual chrome sheets or chrome paint.

Well done Kierdale!,

This is actually a really cool way of bridging that gap on looking fancy but not being too hard to do...

I might try this out on one of my next models... hmmm decisions decisions?!?...
